Thinking about playing non-Spectrum games

edited March 2009 in Chit chat
Strange though it sounds I've never played games on anything but the Spectrum, real machine to 1986 and in emulation for the past 2 years. That's a lie, I have played some free flash games on PC and I once tried Sim City on PC. And I have emulated the Sam Coupe as I heard it was like the Spectrum. But that's it. I was never a gamer, but perhaps I'm changing a bit.

I am just considering the idea of trying a different platform by emulation. I'm thinking Amiga as I don't think I could bear anything too modern and I like the look of the Worms game that was mentioned in another thread. And plenty of people on here like Amigas. And games to download seem plentiful.

Whatever, the emulator/platform that I'm looking for would ideally -

Offer a save game/snapshot facility
Work in Windows XP or Vista
Not require a joystick - or would allow a laptop keyboard to emulate a joystick
Not have games that are predominantly brown
Have a good scene - where games are recommended, walkthroughs can be found, instructions exist etc
Really user friendly emulator - I like SPIN becuase it is so thoughtful towards the person who doesn't care how it all works so long as it does. I can just drag and drop files into it

Does anything fit with this or shall I just stick to Spectrums?

The Amiga is a good scene. WinUAE is a top emulator - I've used it for years. (www.winuae.net)

Not sure what you mean about predominatly brown, but there are tons of good games.

www.lemonamiga.com is the site to goto to find out all this stuff. It has links to all sorts of walkthroughs..

the only problem is that you have to find the Kickstart ROM images to be able to use the emulator (but if you send me a private message, I can send them to you).

I can advise you on how to start the emulator and stuff.

yeah amiga emulation kicks arse. its dead easy to use, just find a dodgy site, and download all the stuff you need, its dead easy to use. you can save the games when playing and change all your emulator settings. you don't need a joystick.

get into it and you will find some great games.

Yeah you can just stick with Spectrums, and like miss out on the last two decades of fun! Why limit yourself? The furthest I go back now is the original Playstation onwards.

If you get bored with the Amiga, and who aside from karingal doesn't, then I do recommend STEEM, which is an Atari ST emulator and fulfills your requests.

It's even simpler to use than WinUAE ... in my opinion.

What's a good site to check out Atari ST range of games, advice, walkthroughs etc?

Little Green Desktop at www.atari.st is the Atari ST site. I've been visiting that site for 10 years and think it's a nice little site.

Amiga's a good call. Read around before getting some games, though. There's an awful lot of dross out there. Personally, I recommend getting acquainted with The Chaos Engine, Speedball 2, Sensible World of Soccer, Another World and Pinball Dreams to start you off.

Lemon Amiga, as mentioned above, is a good site with an excellent database of games. Their top 100 is worth looking at if you're unsure about what to play (although beware of the extent to which nostalgia informs peoples' voting- Wings, for one, I found disappointing).

The Amiga also had a thriving independent freeware scene (innaccurately known as "public domain" or "PD" back in the day). A good site to find some games of this type is The Games Coffer at http://www.games-coffer.co.uk/. I recommend Top Hat Willy and Alien Bash 2 from that site.

CPC Zone is dead for now...

STairway to HEll is a good site - particually worth having a look at the stuff that was never released...

I'd like to think that it's resting rather than dead. Still, at least the following two CPC sites are still active:

    http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/
    http://tacgr.emuunlim.com/

Also remember to check out www.aminet.net for huge loads of all kinds of software for the Amiga.

Be sure to get all main versions of the ROMs.
There's lots of compatibility issues regarding ROMs and games.
You should have 1.3, 2.04, and 3.0 (or 3.1) ROMs available to ensure that most games will run.

I still play games on my old Amiga 1200 (i couldn't live without games like UFO, Syndicate, Theme Park and Project X) I couldn't be bothered trying to find the ROMs to download so i just stuck with the actual real thing which in a way is better i suppose.
My brother plays games on an Master System emulator, looking at the graphics now they look really dated. I remember thinking at the time they were cutting edge.

Well I've had a look at the Amiga and I'm quite unimpressed so far. Winuae is just so worthy... I hate using it. I think it real time emulates the disks making everything really slow to get started. But maybe Amiga is just a tough machine to 'improve' via emulation.
I also hate the need to read instructions. I like pull down menus where you can guess how to do it. I've had to vsearch some history in some horrible surly forums where everyone gets call a noob.
Still, I like the Lemmings games and got Worms working and a few recommended games so I might pursue it. Lemmings took ages to get to the main menu to selact a level and start...
Next I have to learn savestates. But so far I can't even get back to Winuae's menus during play (where do they go?) so I've got some boring trial and error work to do. I'm very sure saving won't be anything like as easy as a Spectrum snapshot. Probably have to create a virtual disk or similar.
Perhaps Znorx was right. and Atari ST is the way to go.. Is Steem more welcoming than Winuae?

You can make a dump of the ROMs in your A1200 and use that in WinUAE.
SaveROM.lha might be used for this.

And the Amiga also have some Spectrum emulators, for those of you who still have a real Amiga to play with.
Or you could try to run a Spectrum emulator for Amiga through WinUAE ?
    Double emulation.....that's for REAL men.:-D

Done, and easier than I thought. Although there was a compatibility problem with the latest version of the emulator and XP. All fine in Vista though.

Thanks for that. I might try that over the weekend.
I had a couple of spectrum emulators on the Amiga but they were really slow, even with all the settings down to low. The games were unplayable, the only things i could play were text adventures. It seems the Amiga can't match the spectrum for speed.
One nil to the Spectrum then!
