Pera Putnik's Simple CF interface

edited March 2009 in Hardware
Hello world.

Has anyone else built one of these and had it working?

Mine kind-of works occasionally, but only for a 16mb card with the 'setup' image on it.

I'd like some moral support before gutting the wiring and starting over - my usual fix for problems like this ;)

In fact, is Mr. P. available for comment anywhere? I've failed so far to track him down.

Cheers!

Sir Morris of ZX81 fame? Welcome!

I have built several simple CF interfaces. Since I enable the CF all the time, (that where I slightly differ from PP's design), I have no more problems with the different brands and types of CF that I posses. I use a sector Load/Save routine that slightly differs from PP. My DOS is that of Opus Discovery, and I am very, very satisfied. (Probably because I do my own coding...)
When I contacted PP last year he was very busy coding for Atari.
Note that PP, as-is, conflicts with IF1.
If someone is interested I will see if I can make my diagram available.
edited: CF always uses full capacity, unless you use the simple IDE interface plus an IDE2CF adaptor plus the IDE sector routines.

@aowen - yes I've considered that. The card where I have had some success is different to the one that doesn't work..

@flumpey - try 'tripad' board - it's different but can be quite useful in the right circumstance.

    @zxbruno - YES! Hi :)

@roko - I'd be very interested in seeing your design modifications. Is there any information about your DOS?

I use one all the time. works beautifully. maybe one time in 50 or so it boots up with coloured squares but hit the reset button and its running again, and mine, thankfully, has never crashed while the macine is in use.
Using with a 4GB regular speed Kingston CF card, and copying files to it using a hdf within "eightyone" emulator running +3e rom then transferring the hdf to the card. The speccy end is a +3e.

Is it the 'pure' CF or the IDE interface that you built?

I built 2 boards at the same time - 1 pure CF and 1 IDE

I am using the pure CF

    Best Regards

This is interesting. I have rebuily my board twice now, and used a number of different decoding schemes without any luck so far. Part of me suspects the cards I'm using, did you find any variability in success with different CFs?

Would you be willing to explain a little more about how to initialise cards, please? I've tried following Pera's instructions but they're not the clearest. Using EO sounds like a great idea.

I'm sorry to say that i made it and bought a 4GB CF and it worked fine off the bat. I bought a standard speed kingston (as some website said to do so) and it worked immediately, so i was set, and never tried it with other cards. The +3e roms worked immediately with it and they use different formatting instructions to PP so I'm afraid I cant help you on either of your issues, but can only say that it does work, as it works fine for me.

I've got some more cards but I am resigned to the fact that I'll have to do some more soldering, trying to reduce bus loading. Which ROM image are you using? I'll be trying this in a 48k plus.
