    I rather like that.

That's pretty cool, but how do lcd screens compare to CRT when it comes to the displayof computers like these?

The guy that made it is found here http://benheck.com/

Looks like he has done similar things with the PS3 and 360, alas no Speccy !

    Network Timeout

The server at benheck.com is taking too long to respond.

The requested site did not respond to a connection request and the browser has stopped waiting for a reply.

Here's how to make a Speccy one.

1 old laptop. Emulator set to full screen. Some stickers.

His website seems to be taking a battering today, seems like everyone wants a C64P !

But that's just a PeeCee emulating a Speccy; it's not actually a Speccy. To be a real Speccy it needs at least the things that make a Speccy what it is: the dodgy keyboard, the ULA and the Z80.

There are LCD modules that are close enough multiples to 256x198 (actually, being slightly larger is better so you get a border) that could be used. Most raw LCD modules take a 24 bit RGB stream and some sync pulses, with a bit of CPLD trickery it would be possible to modify a Speccy to drive one and leave out all the analogue stuff. (Actually, the way to do it I think would be to build something around csmith's ULA replacement)

Yep thats what i want, just want an old skool Speccy keyboard ! I use a UMPC for my Speccy emulator playing. Just wish i could put an old Speccy style keyboard on instead

I want an old shell of a speccy with a USB lead coming off it so I can use it on my PC/Xbox as the keyboard for when I am using an emulator....jump to it Winston.

Wow, that looks great. Imagine what he could do with the Speccy though. Someone should tell him to do a Speccy laptop with original keyboard + motherboard + Divide interface with SD or CF card slot. I think he could pull it off perfectly :)

There's one advantage to having a C64 laptop. It will be the only laptop that no one will ever nick.

[Actually, it's a very impressive achievement, but I can't be seen to be saying anything positive about anything C64 related]

I also think it's a remarkable piece of work. Wouldn't mind having one..

(I'd buy a Speccy laptop more though)

A real Spectrum boots in just one Second. Such a "1 old laptop" takes ages to skip the BIOS messages, start a OS and start a Spectrum emulator. You cannot compare a PC laptop to Spectrum.

Yes, but you can have lesbian porn on a laptop.

Er, so I've heard Mile say. Phew.

Plus you can have scans of all of the Speccy magazines, all of the Speccy games, .mp3/.ay music files, etc, plus you can play PC games on a laptop. A laptop does have many advantages over a portable Speccy, but it's down to personal taste. A portable Speccy would be a talking piece, has to have more soul than a laptop, and might well give you a warm feeling of nostalgia. But the laptop can play PC games, emulate a C64 (alright, so that's a minus point), and do other PC stuff, including catch viruses, slow down over time as Windows gets clogged up, work sloooooooooowly from the day you get it if it's got Vista on it, get you tons of spam e-mail, ...

Blimey, we should all get portable Speccys!

Just think, no more spam, no Windows (Vista or otherwise), no viruses, no DirectX errors, no Microsoft Office paper clip (spit spit), no games running too slow or black-screening, no more BSODs, just Skooldaze, Dynamite Dan 2 and Cobra all day long.

Well I've just been servicing some of my speccy collection. My +3's went t*ts up. Serviced the drives ones now mint (hurrah) the other won't see the drive properly (boo) both drives do work so at least ive a spare. Took apart a +2a, the keyboard has packed up but thankfully I've got spares I can cannabalise.

Getting to the point, the +2a mobo is quite compact not like that c64 monster mr heck was using and I'm thinking that it could do the job.

Just wondering what's the general feeling with everyone? Could it be done and have similar functionality to that c64 laptop?

Any suggestions as to what parts would do the trick? Can it be wired up directly to an LCD?

Your thoughts on the subject Mr Winston?LCD?

I do like it but hate the keyboard , looks to be too far up the base.
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

Overall it looks interesting but it definitely has the look/feel of "HEAVY" and one of its many sibling-words "BULKY" ... I do see that the screen is recessed slightly but it seems that the keyboard sticks out/up farther than the lid will allow (do the keys touch the screen when the laptop is closed?) ... I want to see more pics of this machine!

    Along those lines:
What's the status on Dunny's Speccy OS?

Agree with you there. The grooves/airholes toward the front also seem a bit too wide ... is it coin-operated??? ;-)

I'd find out what Mr Heck did with the AV connections to rig it up to the LCD screen first. The CompactFlash card interface is a must for such a project but I'd add a port for tape users so those in need for their fix of normal tape loading would be satisfied.

The tradiaional Speccy rubber keyboard is also a must!

Actually compared to the official portable C64 - the SX64 launched in the 80s - it's light!

I must admit, even as a C64 fan, I find the case rather ugly.
