I've just received an email from Virgin Media offering me a brand new cable modem free of charge - which I've taken them up on. Be interesting to see what speeds I get through that rather this ancient one I currently use.

Actually, it's not that special. Everyone on Virgin is getting a new modem. I got mine a couple of months ago. Very small, but no difference on speed. I think they're doing it to ensure compatibility with any network upgrades they are working on.
I have a 2mg connection so i am happy, but from what i have been told, in May, Virgin are going to be making all 2mg connections 10mg for i think an extra £2.00 on the bill which will make it £12 for a 10mg connection is that good ?, don't know what the other speeds are changing to.

Actually, it's two seperate things. Your upgrade itself isn't costing an extra £2 a month, but there have been slight service price increases across several of their services.
And if there was a £12 for 10Mb broadband, I think that's a fantastic price.
I use a 'speedometer tester' from Beltronica and my internet speed varies all the time. I had 4meg download speed on wedensday but last night i had 10.2meg download speed. I can't understand how it varies so much (seeing as the exchange is right next door!).
I think I've found out why my speed has been so shit recently. I've only been getting just under 2meg from my 5meg connection for a while now. I'm in the process of setting up a wired network off of my Livebox that Orange sent me. To set it up for a network, I've needed to "open" the box using an online program that gives me all it's information (firmware version, speeds, ip adresses etc
It looks like they have changed our account without telling us, as my speeds are showing "Rate (kbps) 2400 448 ?
I'm going to phone the bastards up as our bill and acount are still saying 5meg download speeds
Fast enough for me at the moment. Though, if I want something faster our local cable company has recently been installing these in every house in the town:
That is a glass-fiber connection to my meter cupboard , which is (allegedly) capable of 120 Meg downloads! :o

Good luck with that, my experiences with Orange have led me to the conclusion that they are a useless bunch of utter utter utter utter utter utter utter CNUTS...
My net seems to have lost about 1.5Mb of it's connection in the past few weeks. It reached a high of 6Mb or so for a month or two, which gave some nice download speeds. Now it's nearer the speeds it used to get. It doesn't really bother me as I don't do too much downloading or uploading and my ISP doesn't seem to cap speeds at particular times.
I usually use this site for my speed tests though as it seems to find the nearest server to test automatically...
Painfully slow, but I've always exceeded the measly monthly bandwidth cap & I've got some downloads going now on a different PC. Fun as it is though to see the speedometer needle hovering around zero during the test. This is what you get if you drop down to the cheapest monthly tarrif offered by your ISP.
Still it does me for now, I don't actually download that much stuff. Apart from that it's a bit like dial-up but doesn't tie the phone line up. :)

Been on the phone with them today about something else (I'm having probles with a network) and as soon as I said Xbox360, it was all the problem of that and nothing at all with their crappy "Livebox". He also couldn't understand that I need a wired network rather than a wireless one as he kept saying "a Livebox will connect wirelessly easily". But, my 360 is 3 floors away and (several walls) away from my Livebox.
I've been having no end of trouble with my broadband connection for months. I'm paying forr "speeds upto 8meg", but my BT line has been checked and rated at only being able to deliver speeds of "upto 5meg". For the last few months, I've only just managed to scrape past the 1meg speed. However, last week, my speed completly bottomed out and I was only able to recieve 135k download speed, of which, I was only really getting about 100k. After several complaining phone calls and threatening to mve to another provider (BT appears to be the best in my area), I've got my speed back. Orange have been blaming BT, BT have said they have come out to check our line (a total lie as the engineer phone me up on Saturday saying that he wasn't coming out as it "was a long way to go"), who have said there is nothing wrong with it and then, late Friday night, most of my speed returns and I was getting 3meg. Today, I've just done another test, just to check and look at this result....
best result I've ever had. A little complaining gets you along way ;) I'm still changing providers once my contract is up though ;)

Pings at best are only a guideline regarding connectivity & speed never view a ping as a reliable measurement.
Being ICMP it often given a very low priority compared to other traffic and like UDP traffic it is not very robust (or reliable).

Lowest upload speed record
Fucking Telefonica
that's as good as it gets here, live out in the middle of nowhere too far from the exchange :(
Soon be off tiscali though, so that's a blessing. We migrate on the 21st hurrah :D
course I'll soon be back in york too, ~6 meg I think I get there.
stop complaining :p
that's hardly the worst 'net connection in the world :)
Probably for the best, sounds like the company will go tits-up very soon!
yup, that's the excuse that finally convinced my dad that they're a steaming heap of shite
500 million euros of debt! and they still claim that there is nothing wrong rofl. :-o

I politely told the man that I cannot sync with my exchage at anymore that 6mb per second. Still that didn't stop the little blighter.
So I told him that my broadband was free, and that it came with my job, that got rid of him.
