I know its a lame story, but thats what makes it funny.
In many countries this would not get a mention over the breakfast table let alone the news.
i wasn't being sarcastic, i was genuinly pleased. look at my location. :-D
If you think that's amusingly trivial, you should see what I read in the IOM Courier last week...
Apparently, Police had busted a group of youths who were using a hotel room as a "drugs den". The lead into the story made it sound like the cops had made a major drug bust - you know, the sort of thing that lead to the collapse of a major Mexican narcocartel, that kind of thing. After informing us that the Police swooped down on the "gang", they revealed that said gang was caught with "marijuana with a street value of £4" and the youths were let off after a stern talking-to and a "promise to seek an end to their appalling drug habit". No, that ain't a typo. £4.
On the other hand, if a drugs bust with the seizure of £4 worth of pot is newsworthy in the crime and punishment pages of the paper, it does mean that really there isn't an awful lot of crime in the first place...
I'm a strong beleiver that sensationalist news stories are doing harm to our culture.
1) They end up causing apethy because people are so used to everything being sensationalised.
2) People cannot tell the difference between sensationalisatation and somthing they shoule be really afraid of. They usually end up not caring.
I took a look in the shop here at work and saw the headlines on the papers. You would think bloody appocolypse was due tomorow. One paper (I cannot remember which one) just had a predominantly black page with large white text saying "IT'S HERE!"
ooooOOOOHHH nnoooOOOOOOHH were all dooooOOOOOOOOMED!!!!
