My PC keeps asking me if i want to install internet explorer 8. Is it worth downloading? I'm not downloading it if it's full of bugs. Has anyone else installed it and if so, had any probs?
I would give this advice for any Microsoft product and have been doing so since NT3.5.
IE7 stopped my wife's laptop from booting. Having struggled through removal under safe mode. Well the struggle was really to stop it reinstalling after removal. It was then applied 6 months later after it (IE7) had been patched. I have spotted similar stories about IE8 on the net.
The new Opera 10 beta is pretty good. I'm on an ageing PC, still running Windows 2000, so the only tabbed browsers I can use are FireFox and Opera.
FF3 runs like a dog, it takes over 1 minute to load up, and javascript-intensive sites like GMail and Facebook cause the system to hang whilst FF process them.
Opera 10 beta loads fully in 8 seconds and there's no hanging when it's on GMail and Facebook.

I'll be sticking with Opera from now on.

Thats exactly what Ff3 is on my PC. IE8 uses very little resources by comparison.
That's one reason why standardised computers are "better" ... I'm not going to mention anything about the Apple Macincrap ... ( D'oh! ) ... PCs are crap in this sense, you probably have a far superior computer than what I'm using and yet we have opposite problems inverted ... err ... you know what I mean ... I hope ... err.
Funny ... it's IE that screwed up a computer I used to use, then switched over to Ff without any probs whatsoever.
IE8 has been proving to be a slow, resource-hungry bast on this puter. Ff3 will remain here for a while yet ... even though I prefer Ff2 honestly.
well what i mean is.........i only have a puter that just does the job, at first ff was ok, but then it started freezing and closing more and more.
i tried a few other browsers (flock, k-meleon) before finally trying and sticking with opera, that only locks up or shuts once in a blue moon

1) Norwegian developers write better code than American developers.
2) Opera runs on legacy OSes.
3) I like the built-in clients (IRC, usenet, email, torrent)

I use IE 8 for few months now. I cannot see much difference from IE7, but there are several menus totally pointless offering you choices on the internet I even don't know what mean.fe : In Private Filtering, Smart Screen Filter, In Private Browsing, Compatibility View, etc. I've just rewritten the text that shows me IE8 menu and put it here without having an idea what does it mean. I've downloaded IE8, because IE7 has had problems viewing some sites fe www.zedge.net had been not shown all, now it is ok.
edit : But by installing IE8 prepare to new font different from IE7 I cannot figure out how to return to old font, but I've allready get used.
IE8 fooked over my PC running XP. I had to uninstall back to IE7.
The IE rendering engine is so integrated into the OS that it caused me massive issues despite only ever using firefox for browsing. The XP active desktop system uses the rendering engine even if no web content is displayed, I have it on cause I like to have all my desktop icons invisible and an auto hide desktop toolbar at the top of the screen (but I digress...)
the IE8 engine seems to have completely broken hardware acceleration of painting the desktop background etc, so when moving windows around it left huge white areas behind the windows as they were dragged. Putting IE7 back fixed it.

apparently we wont get IE bundled with the version of windows...so it wont be highly intergrated in the os :)

Ok, so I downloaded this and gave it a go. The browser crashes everytime I try the two new-fangled features that are being hyped: Web slices and Site Suggestions (although the latter isn't a new feature on browsers anymore). Ah well!

What version is that?
yes you will.
you won't get the *browser* bundled but you'll still have the rendering engine in there
