Which Arcade original was most copied

edited July 2009 in Games
Back in the day, I used to love comparing Kongs, Space Invaders, Pacm(e)n! and other clones

Which classic game :Ddo you think was most replicated - A guy called Spinny has done a collection of Kongs on Youtube and that kept him busy for quite a while!!

No idea, but I would think Space Invaders got plenty of clones of varying crapness. Are we talking of Speccy versions or arcade?

Toss-up between Space Invaders, Pac-Man & Centipede ,closely followed by Frogger, Defender & Asteroids.
I have loads of clones of these titles for Speccy, Oric, Dragon and Electron.
Donkey Kong would probably be the next on the list.
Damn almost forgot Scramble, shed loads of clones of that one too :)

    Must be Space Invaders, surely.

Ironic really that the vast majority of 'tributes' never saw the original title released on the Speccy.

Oh , and in relation to your question , the most variations on a similar theme was surely Space Invaders

I agree, must be Space Invaders, no doubt about that. The least copied Arcade game is sadly Rally-X. I love this game, but never seen a decent conversion for any computer. Good we have MAME LOL

Space Invaders was the most copied game of all time. It also used Intels first microprocessor the 8080. It was also available in cocktail and upright versions.

PacMan saw alot of varients too. I remember when PacMan was all the craze one company was producing bootleg PCB's that when fitted into PacMan machines turned the game into Ms Pacman which became a global success with many female players. Pacman was the biggest selling game of all time, seeing millions of punters spending their cash at the arcades. So much so, that the japanese government had a shortage of coins.

What about Gauntlet and its multitudinous clones? Surely it must be up there...

Easy to convert to the speccy too! You could do a 50 frame per second scroll easily!

But Gauntlet ripped off most of it's ideas from Dandy, didn't it?

And both Dandy and GAuntlet rip ideas from Berzerk - enter the maze, fight your way to the exit
