java emulator in BBcode? Feature request.

edited July 2009 in Sinclair Miscellaneous
as I was browsing cpc-live forums I noticed a nice feature.

http://cpc-live.com/smf/index.php?PHPSESSID=6ffg2t199jml57n51t174j64i0&topic=9.0

They implemented a java emulator in BBcode as "[cpc]romname[/cpc]".

So I'm suggesting [zx]infoseek_id[/zx] code to this forums. What do you think?

(I remember how hard inline images implemented in the forums, but they didn't abrupt forum aura yet (no porn images or 17million pixels high image), so don't think people spam messages with java applets in every thread)

    First: Hello together...

Yes, I made a BBCode for my WebCPC Applet.
The BBCode will ONLY show my applet, no other java applets possible with it.

It's not too hard to make this.
I already made this BBCode for cpcwiki-forum (www.cpcwiki.com/forum) and for my E107 PHP website, too.

    The Syntax is quite simple:
    [cpc=http://mydomain.com/myfolder/myimage.dsk,bootthis.bas,crtctype(1/0)]CPC6128[/cpc]

I don't know how vBulletin forum handles bbode but I'm sure, it should be possible, too...

    Cheers,
    Markus

We already made big progress with this BBcode:

    http://www.cpcwiki.com/forum/index.php/board,9.0.html

It can also handle file attachments...
So it makes it easy to embed own productions / demos etc...

well, we don't have attachments in this forum. But then again Wos tries to be in the legal-side of the emulation efforts.

Attachments can cause troubles if someone starts to attach denied images. That's why I asked only infoseek entries to be selected.

I honestly don't know how many users will use the feature, yet I think it's functional.

    devilmarkus, nice implementation.

I'm not really sure we want this.
Opening a thread in the forum and having all sorts of Java applets started will only severely slow down your browsing, especially since many people will do full quotes when replying (which would include the Java applet).

Contrary to e.g. the YouTube links, the emulator starts playing right away and you can't stop it other than leaving the page...

More practically, there is no single relation between a title and an emulator image on WoS (many titles were re-released, all of which we collect), so I'd first have to develop something that guesses which image to use. It might pick an image that can't be played by the Java emulator (protected loaders for example).

If everyone (i.e. more than 2 or 3 people) wants it, I can put it on the to-do list, but that list is lengthy already and it won't go at the top.

Note that a similar effect can already be reached by making a [url] link to the relevant infoseekplay.cgi reference as reported in each entry. This won't auto-start Java, of course.
    Example: Abu Simbel Profanation.

I liked the idea up until Martjin pointed out the potential for a page full of emulators sucking the life out of your CPU.

    • Make it so that the tag is stripped when quoted
    • Change the emulator so it doesn't start immediately (when called with a specific parameter, if you want to preserve the existing behaviour elsewhere)
    • Make the tag not insert the Java applet directly, but be a little button which says "Click here to play XXX". Insert the applet only when the button is pressed.
    • Many more ways, I'm sure.
None of those are rocket science. That said, I still don't see what real advantage this has over just linking to the emulator.

Some good ideas Phill. One thing I would like to add, purely from an entertainment point of view is to ebable ZX basic to be written between tags, which is then executed.

WE have pastebin.com, yet we have code tags. We have imageshack, yet we have image tags. we have youtube, yet we have video tags.

Why? beacuse the information is embedded in our forum. So it has a little advantage to linking the emulator, you can put comments around it. And everybody can discuss about it *without* leaving the discussion screen.

I don't suggest anything that I personally don't like. Java is a heavy application, it eats resources. it is a monster. But if it will generate a discussion over something, or it will help me understand something better,so it's ok, I can bear the weight of seeing the small java icon on my system tray.

This is the biggest reason I'm against this idea

Java applets run like a dog on this machine and clobber everything else :(
