Norton Internet Security 2009

edited August 2009 in Chit chat
Does anyone else on here use this? I normally find that it's very good (if a bit of a system hog), but this evening it just keeps on shutting down for no reason. I'm getting a message saying that it cant connect to the network (or something like that) and needs to close. I managed to get it to reopen once or twice after restarting my PC, but now it won't start at all. Instead, I get a web page (small size box that won't expand so that I can read everything at once and I need to scrool saround to see the options) say that I've encountered a problem and that I should upload my logs for them to analize, but this keeps on failing as well, saying that I need to redownload the tool. For a start, I can't find where to download it and second, I navagated to an online "chat" help session, but after entering the que at number 19 and getting to number 15 after over half hours wait and after numerous messages about how they are experiencing "higher than normal traffic", I've given up waiting.

Anyone else having trouble?

Yes, I know it's not very popular with the users on here, but until now, I've never had a problem wit it and it keeps itself upto date without me having to do anything.

You've hit the nail on the head. It isn't a problem until you have a problem and then it's a bugger to fix or remove. Sorry, I can't help you but only offer advice which I expect you're expecting on these boards. Backup what you can and get rid of it asap. Reinstall the OS and use a freebie firewall and AV. I know that's harsh but to continue the Aliens analogy, get away from that bitch! Once you've tried some of the alternatives you won't let Norton anywhere near another of your PC's.

Fixed the problem. It's just taken me all evening and 2 technicians from India, two aborted attempts at remote controlling my system from his endand the best part of 4 hours and 1 phone call later and it's all sorted.

Now, all I need to do is sort my broadband speed out, which at the moment, has bottomed out totally. I'm only getting 0.13Mb/s!!! One thing that springs to mind is that I have just brought a new washing machine and have needed to relocate my tumble dryer into the kitchen so that my washing machine will fit where it is needed. I've heard that tumble dryers etc can affect things like this, but do you think it could cause my speed to bottom out like this? I am using wired connection and not a wireless one for my PC.

Who says Indian tech support doesn't work?! Didn't realise the PS3 tech support was in India...

Norton Internet Security is the worse anti virus software you can install.

It uses buckets of processor time, hence, slowing down your machine, the anti virus updates don't catch new threats, and when you want to uninstall the bugger, it won't uninstall properly leaving you with the only option to install Windows again from scratch!

Avoid this software like the plague!

...and get yourself a copy of Bullguard Internet Security. That around ?18 for the year, and it far superior :-)

Freeware offerings such as AVG are okay, but your not going to get as regular update definitions of the latest infections as with something you've paid for. AVG can be a bit of a CPU hogger too on older machines btw. As they say, ya pays ya money and makes yer choice...

The chap who delt with me couldn't have been more any more helpful, although, we did have a little trouble understanding eachother when we spoke on the phone. If I could work out how to report his excellent service to his bosses, I would as he was that helpful, but the Norton info is rather vague when it comes to stuff like that!

Still not got my PS3 online yet though as this had problem had nothing to do with it. I've got a BT enginer coming out to my house to check my phone line as they can't work out what's going wrong otherwise (I'm only getting 135k download speed from an 8meg connection)

I had Norton back in 2005 when i first got my PC but had to get rid of as it was stopping me access the internet. Trying to uninstall it was unbelieveable, i had to get my brother in who is good with computers and even he had a hard time getting rid of it.
