2 new Categories of games, possible?

edited September 2009 in Infoseek database
Martijn, would it be possible to create 2 new categories. I have been thinking that Arcade : Pinball and Arcade : Brick Breaker are 2 categories well defined and which have a lot of games which could be included on them.

What do you think??

As regards the latter, it's not the bricks that get broken but the walls that get broken by knocking out the bricks, so Wall Breaker would be more correct - although if it were a separate genre then I'd prefer Arcade: Breakout as the title.

I agree that these categories would be useful.

This is one of the things still sitting in the back-burner.
Apart from the ones listed, there are loads of other major clones as well, such as Pac-Man, Frogger, Panic or Space Invaders.

I couldn't decide yet - should they be special genres or a feature?
I'm still leaning towards a feature, so that e.g. Horace Goes Skiing can be classed to feature a Frogger clone.

I think they are themselves a different category since they are quite different and have a big tradition.
On the other hand I wouldn't put Pac-man and Asteroids like a different category.

    Jst my opinion :)

Haha, I meant different features for each of course; one feature for pac-man, one for asteroids, another one for breakout and so on.

Can you do a category for 'clone of'?
    My test signature

Or "inspired by...", which I think is already there in some form.

Hehehe, no, I didn't explain myself correctly, I understood you 100%, but didn't express myself properly.

The thing is that Pinball and Wall breaker are 2 categories which dont need any reference to any other game (as pacman, frogger, etc).
And Pinball are even a game in the reality, which you can play it still in bars or pubs, it's like a simulator of a real machine (almost a board game).
Wall breaker have a big tradition as well.

    Cheers!

Yeah, this is what you might rightfully expect, but for the few games that had large quantities of clones, I decided against using this facility as it would just clutter the lists.

Given Ivanzx's reasoning behind the 2 potential new genres, I do agree both could be added, so "Arcade: Pinball" and "Arcade: Breakout" will appear.
Could be a nice job for tomorrow! It's said to rain all day anyway...

Although it seems reasonable for Pinball to have a distinct category, I'm still not clear why Breakout is considered a distinct category of Action but, for example, Pacman or Pengo aren't considered as distinct categories of Maze, or Invaders or Defender aren't considered as distinct categories of Shoot-em-up. Not that I particularly want more categories, as I'm running out of sensible codes to assign to them! - eg. RP / RB / RK are already used. Maybe I'll start using K for new "arkade" categories, thus KP & KB - but that would soon fall over if Pacman and Pengo were made distinctive types.

Ah, so I'm not alone in this after all.
I was beginning to think my reluctance was unfair, hence why I accepted the idea in its entirety...

How about I just add a Pinball category and we continue to ponder about whether the various clones should be features instead?

A first attempt to catalogue all Pinball games has been made tonight. Only 13 of them were found so far.
    This is the list.
Please let me know which ones I missed!

Indeed! And by the looks of the review screens, Spinball was missed as well.
All three are now properly listed as pinball games.

A first attempt has now been made to find all Breakout clones (listed as a feature).
Please let me know which ones I missed!

Also, should Ball Breaker be seen as a (3D) Breakout clone?

Yes. It's just breakout in 3d but the mechanics are the same.

I still think that it would be better to separate Breakout as a new category, but despite of that I will help you find more missing breakout clones ;) :p

You'll find everyone disagrees with making it a separate genre, but your help finding missing ones is appreciated!

Circus is definitely a Breakout clone, and Titan could be considered a clone, but what about Power Ball (havn't got a TR-DOS emulator at hand)?

All three are now listed. I was uncertain about Titan at first, but since it got mentioned twice, I gave it another play and agree. :D
