xbox 360 maknig funny noises.

edited September 2009 in Chit chat
my cd drive started making funny high pitch whines when it was running a disc, i ejected it and it made a low whirring noise which wasn't normal, it ejected alright but it went a bit funny when i put the tray back it, it sort of went back i at twice the speed and made an awful loud click.

ive put it flat instead of stood up and it doesn't seem to be doing any of these thisngs anymore.

is it a known problem and is it something i should be worrid about?

The drives don't like to be moved while spinning discs, I've had the same thing happen to me. This goes for them being off balance too. I just have my 360 horizontal now, and have no problems. It seems it's pretty well known that moving the 360 while it's spinning a disc can screw the drive (google around) -not suggesting you moved it of course, but I've certainly had this when the 360 has been off balance and it's spinning the disc fast. Hopefully, like mine, yours will be okay!

yeah i read that in the instruction when i bought it, tbh i read it as don't move it when theres a disc in, so everytime i moved it i took the disc out. :)

yeah it might have been off balance thinking about it, not by loads but a little maybe.

nice one i will leave it where it is for now, might stick one of those security locks on to stop the gf from moving it. ;)

I've my 360 horizontally laid out. A disc drive on the side never used to give me much confidence anyway.

I lost my second 360 due to the drive packing up. It was through no fault of my own either. I was less than half hour into Bioshock when it happened (on the day it came out too  ) I also have my machine laid flat as I don't trust them upright (it just seems wrong to me). Things were all running smoothly and then there was a click and a loud grinding sound. I managed to eject the disc and luckily, it was the top surface that was scratched and not the play side. But, after that, the drive refused to even open, much less play a game.

    I'm now on my third Xbox360 :(

Thats actually worse, the top side is where the data lives! The "play side" is just a clear sheet of plastic.

the data is on the picture? i never knew that, i always thought it was the shiney bit.

No, he means the data is on the surface behind the picture, visible by the laser from userneath. The bottom of the DVD has a nice thick coating so that most light scratches do not penetrate deep enough to reach the data layer, but scratches on the top (especially ones that noticably remove paint), will, more often than not, cause read problems.

I'd never have a CD/DVD machine on it's side, it just wouldn't "feel" right or safe. Even worse are those old record players where the record was actually vertical - vinyl is so prone to scratching anyway, who'd want to trust their valuable record collection to a vertical turntable and needle?

Although I suppose a fair few people must have been willing, or the machines would never have sold.

It still works...I finally got around to completing the game about 4 weeks ago ;)

The Wii is designed to run upright.

i was just thinking that, should i lay it on its side.

maybe you have to use the big ones on their back and the small ones standing up.

Says who? There are rubber feet on more than one face, so it's designed to run both horizontally and vertically.

I started getting disk read errors some months ago and one of the reccomendations I read was to put the Wii horizontally, which fixed the error.

You said it yourself, while telling me I was wrong! Weird.

Officially, they say it's designed for both:

That said, I'm sure the optical drive is going to work better when horizontal.

From your post I got the impression you were saying the Wii was designed exclusively to run vertically. Not that weird.

you should get two wees and an eggbox and build a little mini stonehenge to worship the chuntey gods.

    Then it will work fine
