Crosswords

edited September 2009 in Chit chat
Not sure how many cryptic crossword lovers we have here, but I quite like them whilst I'm pushing out a Scooby - might as well exercise both ends like!

I don't buy the papers or anything but I'm currently working through a collection of Daily Telegraph crosswords from a book.

So your thoughts on this one would be appreciated.

Clue : One providing cast-off clothing? (7)

I've got the first 2 letters, so I'm looking for KN

Can't for the life of me work this fecker out!

    Knitter

I think. Casting-off being a technical knitting term.

well, judging by your admission that you like to indulge in these crosswords whilst on the shitter, perhaps "couldn't see the LOG for the trees" would be a more appropriate analogy.

    - I'm also available for childrens' parties/weddings etc.

Coincidence! Just bought the Times Crossword Book #12 today. Going to France next week and need some brain fodder.

I've never been good at these cryptic crosswords. I understand there are tricks to working out these clues but I still haven't managed to get the hang of them. Maybe I need to put the New York Times Crossword game back on the DS and practice a bit...

That depends on if you think in English or American English. Because the same words sometimes have different meanings it will really screw with a cyptic crossword and you will probably need a good general knowledge of America in general. You could always stick the Times crosswords on the DS instead.

Cryptic crosswords quite often rely on "local" knowledge so they don't easily translate to other cultures.

Better still are there any Indian newspapers that print this sort of thing?

I think I'll stick with The Sun Crossword on the ds

True. I guess this may explain to some extent why I'm not so good at them.

Almost all English dailies have crosswords in them. Some of them even license it from NYT or other leading international newspapers for Sunday editions.

Would be nice to have a DS crossword that doesn't make your brains fall out for the rest of us who aren't so good at the cryptic stuff!

the new york times cross word is pretty crap, unless you are american. it has questions about baseball teams and tv shows i have never heard of.

The Sun Crossword DS Game is a Real Game, cryptic clues but not too hard, and you should be able to get hold of it easily (No 2222).
There's also the USA today crossword (2348)

Well I've gone and got myself The Times Crossword Challenge. I've just had a go at it with "Concise clues" instead of "cryptic" and it turns out that I'm just bad at crosswords in general. :-|

Don't feel that bad, the Times isn't the easiest of crosswords - even the concise clue version.

You need to get yourself into a mindset with crosswords, Arjun.

If you are starting them, then the best thing to do after having a go is to look at the answers (if the book has them at the back). But don't just put the word in, work out why it's that word.

    Hmm, sure it wasn't "knapped"?

Meh, I don't understand cryptic crosswords. I was an avid fan of the Daily Mirrors Quizword though..and you can do that on line at the mirror site.
I stole it off a space ship.
