Ulysses31

edited February 2010 in New game ideas
I would love to see someone take Ulysses31 and make it into a game. It was one of the best cartoons of the 80's along with the mysterious cities of gold.

It could be either a combination of platform and shoot em up or a wire frame 3d space combat style game with some strategy elements thrown in.

And of course using the original music score would make a fantastic 128k soundtrack

I almost made a JSW mod of this almost 5 years ago, but it never got started, so I didn't announce it.

Maybe seemed like JSW was the wrong format and wouldn't do it justice.

But yep! I'm actually surprised a game of this in some form never actually appeared, it was pretty popular, but maybe not as popular as I thought it was? popular enough for channel 4 to repeat it every christmas holidays at 6:30am in 95, 96, 97, and maybe 98 though, and yes I'm the sad bastard who got up to watch it every morning even if I'd been out on the piss the night before.....must've been mad or something

That drags up a youthful memory. My brother and I planning a multi-stage game based on it using all the design modes of the soon-to-be-released 'Arcade Dream'. Oh, how we laughed.

P.S. I have the full set on DVD now.

It's been done. It was called Starblade, but it was clearly inspired by Ulysses 31, and the company behind it (Silmarils) was French (as was the original programme). You walked around a side-scrolling spaceship, but you could also fly the ship to places. There was a demo on the coverdisk of ST Format.

There's always Arcade Game Designer, if anyone fancies giving this a go... It will let you move up to a dozen sprites around at 25 frames per second without flicker, and you can define your own game rules so you're not limited to predetermined game "types", the way you were with certain other game designers.

"Uchū Densetsu Yurishīzu Sātīwan" aka "Space Legend Ulysses 31". I loved it, but never saw the first episode.
