Frustrated VLC rant +(.OGG + SpyBot (short))

edited November 2009 in Chit chat
Argh!

I have a file which is a bit screwed up (jerky motion, then quits video player) but VLC is able to convert it successfully and then play that file (output > .avi) BUT that converted .avi file is not recognized by any other players/video editors on this computer ... and I want/NEED to splice this video to a project I'm working on.

Anywho ... I'm going through the list of file formats converting and I'm a bit frustrated ... why the *@#!%& doesn't VLC add the last .*** to the file-suffix?

And why don't other players recognize the converted output from VLC?

Is the outputted file still corrupt (then why is VLC playing it just fine?) or is that file based on some VLC-specific codec?

And why does Spybot look suspiciously at any .ogg file I have?

Next file-format will be .OutTheWindowScrewThisIAmGoingToTheBar

:-x

.AVI is just a container. It can contain audio and video using many different codecs. VideoLAN Client doesn't have codecs of its own, it only uses standard ones (such as MPEG-4, which is what your file probably is). Unfortunately Microsoft only supports a bastardized version of MP4, not the standard.

tried installing the klite mega codecs pack....and tried playing with media player classic see if it works, i barely have any trouble, also Gspot will tell you what codec etc it is using

VLC offers a bunch of settings for outputting*, and I've been going through them one by one ... and they all work in VLC but not in anything else, neither M$ Media Player nor the dinky Cyberlink PowerDirector :-(

*Hence why I put "I'm going through the list of file formats converting and I'm a bit frustrated" up in my post but it was too vague.

using VLC to transcode files is always a PITA in my experience.

grab the windows build of mencoder. The manual's fairly impenetrable, but it definitely works...

Might be worth looking at "Handbrake" - http://handbrake.fr/
