Its a nice idea, i did it years ago for someone but it isnt obviously 'official' or that but its a decent gesture to make.

I've copie this from wikipedia, just cos it says more clearly what I would have rambled to say
    Star-naming Companies
    e?
Several for-profit star-naming companies sell the right to list stars in their private registries under whatever name the buyer so chooses. However, the IAU (and, therefore, most astronomers) do not recognize those names as "official" (although the companies themselves do). Most astronomical organizations (and most international scientific organizations) say that the IAU is the only body allowed to officially name heavenly objects. (It is important to realize that the companies, in fact, often 'doublebook' prominent stars with each other; and sometimes the same company will assign different names to the same object. The customer, of course, is not informed of any prior claim.)

If you don't mind it being official or not, it doesn't matter I guess.

Amongst other things you could consider would be getting a new variety of rose named after them.

the trick is to locate it also..

    do you lot use stellarium?

    http://www.stellarium.org/

it takes my mind off when I'm "annoyed" with light pollution. people think I'm sorta mental when I go countryside and look up to the stars... (and no I'm not gonna sing a coldplay song)

I've only seen one shooting star, when I was 30.. simple things, but I guess if you live in a dark place, they are more common
