When you say 'more cut down', what do you mean specifically? Less locations, less sprites, or both?

I was at Byte Back where Jonathan Cauldwell wrote a game from scratch over the weekend. Very impressive stuff - very talented bloke.

Looks like there's nothing 'Under the Drive', and the whole of the Megatree is replaced with the bridge from JSWII. Not been up on the roof yet. I don't know if the sprites are pre-shifted as there are some that are used both vertically and horizontally. I notice they all start at the very top or extreme left of their paths. Still amazing what has been fitted in.

Edit - there aren't any ropes, and the whole of the roof, from Nomen Luni onwards, is inaccessible. You can only get as high as 'Under the Roof' and 'The Attic'. I also wasn't able to walk off the left of the 'Tool Shed', so presumably the beach and yacht aren't there. Horizontally moving sprites don't have different animations for going left/right. I'm not sure if Willy has been redesigned or if there's some sort of compression going on with his sprite. But there must be some really impressive data compression going on to get all that room data in.

It's impressive and I found it quite fun to walk around the map and see the changes. Does anyone know how many screens there are?

The movement of both Willy and the enemies aren't terribly good though. It seems very choppy.

It could be nice to see the source.

Other than a noise when dying, there's no sound or music, and there are just 38 screens in total. The Commodore 16 version has 20 I think. Some of the sprites are different and there is also less animation. The Nightmare Room is easier than the original in my opinion.

Perhaps it could be added to the WoS archives???

Now, I like Matthew Smith's games, but I'm also a fan of Mr Cauldwell's work. So which is better? There's only one way to find out...

I remember that I had an email contact for Matt Smith, so I've sent him the game (as long as his email address is still being used/checked by him). I wonder what he'll think? If I find out, I'll let you know.

    Shaun.

Wow! I feel almost famous! :)

I'll be able to say to all my friend(s): "Hey, I know someone... well know OF someone... who has an email address (that might even be current) of none other than Matthew Smith!"

And my only (alleged) friend will say, "Matthew who?" ;)

I've always wanted to be someone... In retrospect, I think I should've been more specific...

Managed to get it today. It is great! Quite a feat to get a very playable version of JSW in just 16k.
    Brilliant :)
