Games so insanelly unforgiven that still make you curse everyone involved in it?

Airwolf - I managed to get to the last scientist and was on my way back on my last life. I got killed and never played it again

Cobra - can't get past level 2! Get's me tetchy.

Ghosts n Goblins - is it just me or is this game really hard?

Flying Shark - great game but sometimes it seemed to kill you 'unfairly'. It still makes me throw a wobbler today

One of the few speccy games I completed (or at least finished one "loop"!)

Army Moves too - the first stage was just so ridiculously difficult.

Army Moves wasn't that bad. Now try Mutan Zone. That's what I call insane!

I haven't played the game since it's release - but was pleasantly suprised at how cheeky it was - via youtube...

That's shifting a fair amount of pixels that is!

Never seen the parallax bits before - so is the scene being re-drawn real-time from pre-shifted coloured 16x16 pixel blocks? Could it scroll at any speed then?

Each 'main loop' generates the code to display the next frame (whilst the last frame is being dispayed). They are not 16 by 16 blocks - they are 48*16 (plus a blank 16*16 block).

    It works like this...

    Left edge
    Middle repeat
    Right edge

You can have "left edge" + "right edge"

    or

"left edge" + "middle repeat" + "middle repeat" + "middle repeat" <etc> + "right edge"

    or

    Block 1
    Block 2
    Block 3

    or

    Block 1
    Left edge
    Right edge

    etc.

It runs at 25 fps - because it has to do all the masked sprites and stuff.

The vertical lines on the last level are done by just writing to the 'blank block'. Every pixel on the screen can move - with little or no slow down, within reason.

Rebel - I have so many bad memories of that game.
Galletron - it's a son of a bitch to play.

    Everyone's A Wally
    Slap Fight
Spellbound (MAD) - I never really got very far into it. In fact all the Magic Knight games were a bit of a bitch IIRC.
Wheelie - don't think I ever completed a level, or maybe got to level 2.

    Rockstar Ate My Hamster
The Untouchables (I never would've seen the game past the first level if it wasn't for the "Humphrey Bogart" cheat)
    Pyjamarama
    Fahrenheit 3000
    Green Beret

Erm... and Mugsy's Revenge, funnily enough!!

ha seeing Cobra again made me laugh. The sound effects and little tunes are just brilliant. I could listen to Cobra just walking along all day

It's given me an idea dot dot dot

We've been through this before... it's frikkin' hard, ok? ;)

Come on! Green Beret has average difficulty, sometimes there are more enemies than you can stab, but that's what special weapons are for.

On the other hand, Cobra is unplayable indeed, I tried it out some months ago, and I felt that it was one of the rare cases which maybe doesn't deserve a second chance.

Don't make frobush come to Spain and have him kill two birds with one stone ...

I guess it is quite up to what game you like the most and get the most practise with. With Cobra I am not sure if I ever got of the first level! :)

I always thought Cobra was a bit odd as it sounded exactly like Hysteria.

Blimey, round 3 on Cobra is amazing! I remember being pretty good at the game and got quite far. I always loved the look of it as well, but, wow, it looks even better as a spectator - when you're playing it, you're too busy just trying to stay alive! Fabulous stuff.

Another really tough one for me is Tomcat by players. Can get no further than Stage 2.

Agreeing with messages above; I would quite happily stick that beanstalk right up Jack's arse.

Tomcat, I remember playing a demo of the game from YS or SU, and that demo was unplayable due to the syndrome of the invisible bullets..

I would say that the Spectrum did often not really go well with detailed monocrome backgrounds and small bullets in the same colour.. Why could they not make bullets larger or perhaps even made the attribute INK red or something around them? It would perhaps have looked a bit strange, but also made lots of games more playable.

When I play it at double speed in Spectaculator, I can pass the first stage easily :p... on the second, once I got killed very near the end.

I felt like you 5 years ago when I first tried the game, but some years after, in 2006 I decided to give it another chance and then I realized how good the game is. Beleive me! Give it another try, be patient! :)

I hope Frobush doesnt come now here huh?! :D

    Ninja hamster:

Very hard to eliminate enemy fighters.
Quickly recover the energy that you are taking off.
Thus, the fighting never ends.(with pokes).

    Helter Skelter:

Unable to complete the last level.

    Mot(spanish game)::razz:

I can not get beyond the first level.

I guess THE toughest has to be One Man And His Droid. It's quite dificult to try to finish a game where you haven't got a **** clue what you're actually meant to be doing - with or without instructions.

Same (but to a lesser extent) goes to Zoids.

The most unfairly tough game must surely be Colditz. Playing via emulator , and reducing the game-speed down to the very lowest level , I was able to complete the final level - after about 10 attempts. How anyone could do it at normal speed quite frankly baffles me.

Oh and DT's Deceathalon - that final 1500m required real staying power

Mikie. Since 1986 the only thing I've done is running away around the class but the teacher always catches me... frustrating.

Cobra and Green Beret, not only too damn hard games, but also so bad coded :D :p

I could get to round 4 on cobra. speccy version is the easiest version to play. The cpc version is just a block mess and unplayable.

Really? That is impressive. I do not think I have tried it in double speed but I guess it would increase the difficulty since it is quite furious as it is.

I tried it after posting and must remove the word "easily", since it took me a few tries ;)... but I did reach the second stage and died half way there. I guess it's due to lack of practice.

I guess I will have to try that too! :-P

My record in normal speed is to reach level seven. The speed of the enemies increases a lot after the first four levels is completed so I would not want to do that in double Spectaculator speed..
