    Hello,

    I made the Blackstar video.
Really pleased with the response its been getting so thanks!
I'm impressed at what you've been able to work out so far, there's been some mighty fine snooping going on!

Hi Tom! I really like the video and I'm impressed with the amount of work that went into producing it. Congrats!

I uploaded this to YouTube a few hours ago. Made just for fun, with full colour clash, etc.

Any chance you could share the original Spectrum loading screen in .scr or .tzx format, if it ever existed?
Could you please explain how the bottom part of the screen is loaded, and if the attributes we hear are the real ones?

    Thanks!!!

Regarding colour clash, I was trying to incorporate it at the start as I wanted to make it as accurate as possible but it ended up making the video unwatchable so I had to ditch it for the sake of making it accessible to a wider audience.
I had to cut the intro audio down as it was taking too long to get to the actual song that the video was meant for.
I hope it was an acceptable compromise!

    Cheers,

    Tom

    Welcome to WoS Tom!

Put yer feet up, stay a while :-)

I like your video but would have loved to see a colour-clash version ;-)
(I know, I know, wider audience, etc)

Anywho, I also like the vid on the stringmouse site, did you make that one too? There are game characters there also most of us know.

Oh, and also also ... why, oh, why is the sound of an alarm clock going off at the end of the vid(showreel one)??? It sounds exactly like mine, so I stood up, went to my room and ... nothing! Later I listened to the vid again, heard the same sound, put two and two together and got an A+ in mathematics.

Duh ! Just seen that video to shooting gallery, explains everything now about his background etc

Awesome video. I managed to pinpoint the following game references:

    - Robot Messiah
    - Daley Thompson's Decathlon
    - "P"s, buildings, the cone-like enemy and the rapacious bird from Bomb Jack
    - fishes and oysters from Scuba Dive
    - Liberty and Taj Mahal from Race Against Time
    - old woman, girl, wounded enemy and rescue doctor from Death Wish 3
    - some enemies and skylines from Renegade
    - an enemy from Narc (not completely sure about this though)
    - some junk parts from Vigilante

And there are boulders from dizzy. (at the start of the video, around big movie screen)
some trees (around robot messiah) from the muncher (http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0003323)
purple road from midnight resistance (with ramjam truck)

    maybe's
a blue shellfish from rodland *or* rainbow islands (under water part).
also, robocop? (an alley before RamJam truck shown.)
Green Beret? (just before parfume billboard shown, as a iron wall background)

Looks like there are many more games in that video...
    Can somebody post the lyrics?

    LYRICS BY M.ANIFEST

    BLACKSTAR

    VERSE 1

It was all a dream, but i never knew I would be seen
Eventually I might make the big screen
We rarely had access to magazines
But since a teen in Accra Ghana
Hopes to be that young bloke
Had a big stash of Tupac quotes
Now Im older, witness the growth
Fame keep spreading still Im broke
Traveled the seas with the red gold green
Now Im a black star caught in between
    Intergalactic star it seems
    Chris says knowledge reigns supreme
But we were raised living the high-life
    Pilolo that was my life
Hide and seek, playing football in the streets
    Tatale, kelewele and beans
    Painting portraits of our culture
And the burdens on my shoulder
    Embraced it now Im older
Moved to a climate thats colder
Still Im, heating up I told ya
And still going hard like a boner
They slept on me like coma
Now they cant see me glaucoma
    Travel, considered a roamer
    Considerably a loner
The smell of my odour, is a beautiful aroma
And Richy Pitch pitch up, let me get auto-
Biographical, this is my life in flow tho

    Hook

I'm a black star, shining bright from afar
many miles from home, still, my heart is in Accra
i'm a black star, shining bright far from afar
in a world of my own, intergalactic star

    VERSE 2

Lets play a game of hide seek
    Lets find emotions buried deep
Just last week, a song made me weep
It reminded me I got promises to keep
Before I sleep I got miles to walk
I got to rep madina where I learnt this talk
Its far from new york, but theres concrete blocks
Uncompleted buildings where the weed heads talk
Rawlings circle, estate, to the old road
i.p.s., where the armed robbers law low
new road, akosombo junction, and zongo,
in the evening for strangers its a no-go
Allah Akbar, the imam in the morning
sound of the prayers before the crack of dawn and
everyone was geeked if you had music that was foreign
little did I know in the future I would be touring
little did I know when I first heard Reggie Rockstone
that less than a decade later, Id be penning mad poems
but this is destiny, definitely passed on by my grandpa
Sulley Muntari of vocabulary, Im a black star

    HOOK

I'm a Black Star, shining bright from afar
many miles from home, still, my heart is in Accra
I'm a Black Star, shining bright far from afar
in a world of my own, intergalactic star

I'm a Black Star, shining bright from afar
many miles from home, still, my heart is in Accra
I'm a Black Star, shining bright far from afar
in a world of my own, intergalactic star

Brilliant! Is this RamJam related to The RamJam corporation that used to churn out speccy games in the 80's?
  • edited March 2010
    Simply great, thanks RamJam.

Would you show us the pieces of code that was done on real Spectrum ?

And if I may inquire, how long did it take you to create this video?

Sadly not but the guy who did the video seems to be 'one of us' from back in the day

    Hi,

The audio at the start is an edited version of the intro from Bionic Commando.
Nothing was actually coded to create any of it. The loading sounds and screen appearing are just timed to look like its loading but it's all animated trickery. Sorry to disappoint!
The video on the Stringmouse site is mine and was my showreel from when i was freelancing before I set up with Bevan Stephens to form RamJam.

The alarm clock and all the sound effects in the music on the showreel are all in the original track I used - 'the bed' by Richy Pitch.
I faded out the alarm clock as much as I could - it tricks you on the original track even more.

Richy Pitch actually coded and created the shooting gallery game so nothing to do with me.

Well done to everyone for spotting most of the games that were used!
I created a few spectrum style Ghanaian landmarks in there too...

    Cheers,

    Tom.

Sorry for digging out this old thread, but I was looking for info on Alkatraz protection system, and it seems that some of this audio contain mastering code for Alkatraz-protected tapes?

Following a post by Chris on c.s.s...
Already on it. :P Basic loader (123 bytes in lenght, autostart line 10) reads:
    10 BORDER 0 : PAPER 0 : INK 0 : CLEAR 24999 : POKE 23739,111 : LOAD "" SCREEN$ : LOAD "" CODE : POKE 23739,244 : PAUSE 0 : RANDOMIZE USR 50896

The code blocks following the Basic loader are:

    Bytes: bionic48$ code 30000, 6912
Normal Data Block: 1569? (Unsure. Wav2tap isn't being able to output a clean .tap)
    Bytes: bionic48c CODE 25000, 40536
    Normal Data Block: 506 bytes

I'll post a link to the .TAP and .WAV files shortly, so those who know code can take a look and unveil its mysteries. :D

I'm now too late for the ones you posted back then, do you still have them around?
    zxbruno wrote: »
Yes, I do have some free time today. Here's some text I extracted from the last code block:
    48K Mode - Mastering 128K Game
    SAVE BASIC
    SAVE Loader
    SAVE Gamecoder
    Version 2.40
    1986 Appleby Associates
James Wood, Antony Dunmore & John Bayliffe
Use UP DOWN & ENTER to Select Option

That's what I'm missing in all the Alkatraz-protected tapes I've checked, so, this one must be different.

Following this info, I grabbed Bionic Commando (also an Alkatraz one) and checked it, but only found the usual in the loader and nothing quite like this in the next blocks. The version used for this must be different from mine, as (from the bits zxbruno exposed) it looks like it is the master one, a thing I was unable to find elsewhere.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned Jof's athletes running in the video from Hypersports.

Here the guys talk about the inspirations for the song and video. Turns out one of them used to be into speccies, and wrote and sold games when he was 14!

@lfaria: I don't have that data anymore, but everything I had was extracted from the music video clip. Your best bet would be to contact Tom through his website and ask where he got his copy of Bionic Commando. :-)
