What was the last great side scroller beat-em-up?

edited March 2010 in Chit chat
For years these where royalty among games... I can think of Renegade II, Double Dragon, Final Fight (my favourite) Asterix (arcade version, my 2nd favourite), X-MEN (if only I had played it back then, this would be my favourite!) ... the list goes on and on and on...

but today this is a genre that seems long gone.

so my question is: what was the last good game of this type? (in a way, probably shemnue?)

and why the downfall? was all that was possible about this genre achieved?

A quick look through my 2.5D MAME folder shows that this kind of game died out in about 1993. There are very few games after this year. Sengoku 3 (http://caesar.logiqx.com/php/emulator_game.php?id=mame&game=sengoku3) looks like it could be one of the last games of this type. I think they kind of died out with 3D games taking over. I remember Fight Force being slated for it's old school gameplay style and that was basically a 2.5D game brought into 3D

In that case, I'd say the last great traditional scrolling fighter is this one...

    Violent Storm from 1993 :)

Nice. I was going to mention that title, it is very humourous, like the ticket vendor boss and all the stuff going on in the backgrounds. But surely there must have been some good titles made in this style even after 1993? Not necessarily in 2D either.

    Guardian Heroes (Saturn).
    Guardian Heroes Advance(GBA).
    Gekido Urban Fighters (PS1).
    Gekido Advance (GBA).
    Double Dragon Advance (GBA).
    Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Cop (Saturn).

.....at a push I would've said Spikeout, but that was pretty much fully 3D, and I don't think it was released on anything other than Arcade, there is a version of the XBOX but not sure if it's the same game? Never played it?

That's all I've got, but I'm bound to have played more? :D

There was Muramasa last year for the Wii. Mind you, I'm not sure if you'd exactly call it great; the only thing particularly novel about it is the eye candy graphics.

Tekken Force? It was a side-scrolling beat-em-up built into Tekken 3 on the Playstation.

I think the last great one arcade was D&D: Shadows over Mystara. The year is 1996.

    Guardian Heroes (Saturn).
    ............
    Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Cop (Saturn).
    ............

    I recently found this site --> www.dcisozone.com

And I've downloaded about 50 games I never actually managed to buy for the Dreamcast(and burnt them to disc for play in my Dreamcast - not an emulator)

Anyway - Dynamite Cop on the DC - I can't stop playing it - even if it is far too easy - it's just very very enjoyable :) So I'll go with this as the last great scrolly beat 'em up.

    Kuri Kinton was quite fun.

It's older than I thought as well 1988, maybe some of the slew of fighters from the 90's took ideas from this game?

Yeah, that's a great game. It's also called vendetta. Also, those characters are in no way Mr T and Hulk Hogan etc.. ;)

Shame that MAME has kind of cocked it up recently. I can't remember what goes wrong, but I havn't been able to get it to work for several builds now :(

Time to dig out an old MAME to see if it still works on that...

lol Shenmue being put in this category, there's no way. And the combat wasn't even that great, certainly not the highlight.

Although it is true that SoR2 is the greatest sidescroller of all time, there are ones that came after it that rivalled its greatness. Particularly: Sengoku 3 and Guardian Heroes.

However Die Hard Arcade was also pretty decent, and Arad Senki (aka 'Dungeon Fighter') is an epic online scrolling beatemup. It's criminal that DF is blocked to European ISPs, they need to get the license to release it over here.
