Do you really mean that? I've heard people over the (early) years say that FT had really good play mechanics, but I'd have thought that such an early game (with flickering sprites and a monotonous buzz that sounded nothing like an engine, if I remember rightly) would have been superceeded massively. I'm no racing or bike fan, so I can't judge, but wasn't the Spectrum's TT Racer supposed to have been very good, to name just one game?
Oh yes. If you want to race against other vehicles in real time, then FT is very hard to beat.
It came out at a time when Poll Position was really hyped, delayed and when it finally came along, quite poor.
The fun of FT is that you race against 39 oponents. Arcade conversions that came later saw you racing for 'Extended Time', which I found unsatisfying. They looked and sounded better but FT was real high velocity racing compared to these. WEC Le Mans is a really great conversion, Super Hang On not too bad either but for me, competing for track position is what its all about. Power Drift and the Nigel Mansell Gremlin game are good (though NM is a bit easy). Lotus Turbo Esprit is also good. But none of these have the same gameplay as FT.
I think if you got FT on a C90 a few years after it came out, you'd probably not put the time into it. It needs patience as you will hit reset quite a lot and trail in last a few times. But beating FT is a real buzz.
TT Racer is good, but it is VERY VERY slow - it is like looking at a slideshow when playing :) In my opinion FT is still the best bike racer on the ZX, despite the flickering and being so damn unforgiving when you hit other players :)
They're very different animals really. TT Racer is much more of a simulation, analogous to games like Revs and F1GP. Yes it's a bit slow, but its offering a heck of a lot more realism.
I'd think that games like Super Hang On and Enduro Racer are much more in the mould of Full Throttle; sure, you're just driving past random obstacles in them, but FT never really felt that much like racing to me. I suppose it does have fairly realistic circuits though.
Yep like Matt says TT Racer was meant to be the more realistic racing type of game, but for a more arcade type of fun it was Full Throttle back then.
It has aged badly when you see those flickery sprites and the sound like ewgf says but back then (was it 1984 ?) it was excellent, the best racing game easily.
I mean i look back at Chequered Flag which i played tons and its terrible but back then it brings back great memories but hasnt aged well, same with Full Throttle.
WEC Le Mans is still the best racing game in my view, used to play that a lot
No, I think Full Throttle is the best because it's just so tight. You can be 40th halfway through a two lap race and still win, and you can be first halfway through and still come 40th with very little margin of error. Which is what frustrates people about it, but I like it for that, and I thought it was pretty playable. Not surprising when you consider the author.
Chequered Flag is still good too in my opinion, and I like TT Racer, but of the three I think FT is best.

I'm currently researching a feature on Micromega, so if it makes it to print, it should be an interesting read for Speccy fans.
