The Spectrum screenshot odd-one-out round - easy skill level

edited June 2010 in Chit chat
You know how in the (British) program "Have I Got News For You" they have an odd-one-out round, where they show you four photographs, and you (well, the competitors on the program) have to choose which is the odd one out, and why?

For example, once the photos were of three people the British Army had fought against (Sadanm Husein, Gadaffi, and I can't remember who else), and one photo of someone who'se country we were fighting for. And the odd one out was the bloke we were fighting with, as we hadn't sold his country any weapons, whereas the other three had killed our soldiers using weapons that they'd bought from British arms manufacturers.

Or another time the pictures were of an ice-cream stand on a British beach, a raw sewage pipe going into a river where people went swimming, and two more of filthy pollution of poplar beauty spots. And the odd one out was the selling of ice cream on a beach as that was now illegal as it was "unhygienic", whereas the other three were all perfectly legal.

Anyway, how about a Spectrum version? Here, for your delectation are some easy ones.

It's easy to play. Simply look at the four screenshots, one each for each of the four games in each question. Decide which game each screenshot is from, which game is the odd one out, and why. For example:

*** Example question ***

SuperHang-On.gif

WECLeMans.gif

EnduroRacer.gif

FullThrottle.gif

The above four screenshots are from, respectively, Super Hang-on, WEC Le Mans, Enduro Racer, and Full Throttle.

Which is the odd one out? WEC Le Mans, of course.

Why: Well, WEC Le Mans is a car racing game, the others are all bike racing games. Easy! In fact, you could probably have worked that out just by looking at the screenshots, even if you didn't know which games the screenshots were from.

Here are some more easy ones. So, what do you think is the odd one out in each question, and why? I'll post the answers tomorrow, along with some medium difficulty questions, and on Wednesday I'll post some hard questions. I'll leave the names of the games in a spoiler box, in case you need a clue, but if you need to look at the names then please say so in any response you post - no prizes here, so be honest at how you arrive at any answers you might post.

Have fun!

    Round1:

Three Weeks in Paradise is the odd one out, it is the only one with the score / info and lives at the bottom.

    Round2:

3D Deathchase is the odd one out as it is the only one viewed from the characters eyes and the only one not written by Matthew Smith.

    Round3:

Phonex is the only game set in space and it is the only game of the three not to use the standard Sinclair character set for the score and lives.

Round 1: Happiest days of your life is the odd one out, as it was nothing more than an awful shambling Clone of a Wally game, wheras the other 3 are infact Wally games.

Round 2: Deathchase is the odd one out as it wasn't written by Matthew Smith, the other 3 were.

Round 3: Ant Attack is the odd one out as it's the only game that uses an isometric view.

Umm - I presume Happiest Days... as it wasn't a Wally Week / Automata game, and 3D Deathchase because Matthew Smith didn't write it. Not sure about the last one, but of the top of my head, is it 3D Ant Attack because it's a 48K game? I wouldn't be sure without looking up Pheenix, but as I recall the only particularly notable thing about Sir Lancelot is that it's a 16K game.

According to the infoseek Ant Attack is 16k? I always thought it was 48k, but maybe it isn't? I was going to say the rest were 16k but I thought I'd double check so I looked it up and apparently it is also 16k.

That's why I gave a different answer to that?

Ant Attack is definitely 48K and Pheenix is definitely 16K. You tended to learn these things when you had a 16K Spectrum with a RAM pack in 1983.

That depends on which Ant Attack you are looking for (we have 3 entries with that same name), really. The Quicksilva game from Sandy White is listed as 48K, while the other two are listed as 16K.

I would say "Sir Lancelot" for the last one, because it is the only one where you are not fighting animals/aliens. (At least not in the screen shown, I have never played the game..)

Sir Lancelot .. because it's not made in the UK (Spanish)

they all the odd ones out.. I'm crap at all of em :D

'sir lancelot' doesn't have two of the same letter next to each other.

Do not forget that Sir Lancelot is the only game of the four being released in 84, the other three in 83.

On the other hand, Ant Attack is the only game without black background! And the only game staring with a vowel.

An "odd one out" game...? Hmmmm...

    *ponder*

Would go well alongside Squillionaire and SpecTrumps...

    Hmmmm....

    Nice game, Penfold!

I think questions 1 & 2 are very easy and have been already answered. Question 3 is a bit more difficult... being twisted, I think is Psst!, because the corresponding company starts with a vowel (Ultimate), and the others start with consonant (Melbourne House, Quicksilva and Megadodo)

    ...

By the way, don't you think this thread deserves a genuine ZnorXman's *Alhakazam!*(TM) to 'Games' section? ... what do you think, Znorxmy?

    Answers:

    Question one:

Games: Pyjamarama, Automania, Happiest Days of Your Life, Three Weeks in Paradise

Odd one out: Happiest Days of Your Life

Reason: The other three games star Wally Week, who doesn't appear at all in Happiest Days of Your Life.

    Question two:

Games: Jetset Willy, Manic Miner, 3D Deathchase, Styx

    Odd one out: 3D Deathchase

Reason: 3D Deathchase was written by Mervyn J. Estcourt, whilst the other three games were written by Matthew Smith.

    Question three:

Games: PSST, Sir Lancelot (the platform game), Ant Attack, Pheenix

Odd one out: Where Time Stood Still

Reason: Ant Attack is a 48K game, whereas the others are all 16k.

There were some very clever answers posted, and of course it shows that a pitfall of a game like this is that there can be reasons why any of the four are the odd one out, and also might be many reasons why the odd one out I nominate is the odd one out but not the reason I chose.

JuanF. Ramirez, Rickard and fog came up with some interesting thoughts, though Mile made the mistake of overestimating my intelligence. Me not think of that explanation, me too fick

Scottie UK, sorry, but you were wrong about question one, though your point was correct, but it wasn't the answer I had. You got question two right, although you did cheat a bit by giving two answers (the character's eyes bit was clever, but not what I had), naughty, and sadly you were wrong for question three.

DM, well done, two out of three correct, and Joefish supplied the third answer.

Let's see how you all do in the next round - I've just posted the medium difficulty questions in the thread:

    http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/showthread.php?t=29844

in the Sinclair Miscellaneous forum, as this should really be in a Speccy-related fourm and not the off topic chit chat forum.

Easy Question 2: Styx is the odd one out because it's the only one I haven't played.

Damn, another typo - I really should stop being distracted by the work I'm paid to do. If Martijn would pay me to post on WOS, then I could pack in my other job, so everyone please pm him to suggest that.

Anyway, I was going to use Where Time Stood Still as the odd one out, since it would be the only one of the four that was not 16k (being 128k only), but then I thought that some people might not recognise it, so I changed it for the far more recognisable Ant Attack (which is of course 48K). I wanted to use an isometric game, as that way all of the games were obviously different genres (single screen shooter, platform game, isometric game, and scrolling shooter, respectively), so that no one would wrongly guess that the odd one out was down to a game type. But I left WTSS listed in the text file I'd written
