Whats your definition of "geeks" and "nerds"?

edited August 2010 in Chit chat
I see that being a geek or a nerd is something that is coming more fashionable ,i have no idea or what it would take to be one,but i think its being term is being more open or abused now, sometimes used by those who haven't a clue about certain things,so much so the wiki article says the same thing, personally i think the title belongs to those who work in the specific industry and deserve the title, even other forums, you meet brainboxs who break the stereotype of geek or nerd,i doubt they would even talk about their job or their interest in pub, whats your view on this?.

A 'geek' is a tech savvy person who also retains some level of social skills.

A 'nerd' is a tech savvy person who has no social skills or is shunned by society.

You call a Geek to fix your computer.
You call a nerd to fix your computer then steal his lunch money and beat him up.

i like old comps and games, but wouldn't call myself a geek

a geek is a goody two shoes that does no wrong, quite naive.

and a nerd is into computers and stuff like that.

they might have meant something different ages ago, but not these days.

geek chic isn't about being able to install linux, its someone with a checked shirt, glasses, thin and scruffy hair.

    simon amstel is a geek.

basically they are the good versions of pete doherty.

the lass in ugly betty was a geek, but she wasn't into pc vs console debates. :)

"geek" --> a person at least as technologically obsessed as I am.
"nerd" --> a person more technologically obsessed as I am.
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!

Geek: anyone who knows more about computers than the average person.
Nerd: not really in my vocabulary, but I'd say a very book-ish person, reading up on everything up to the Nth degree, even if it's not understood.

Words (re)invented by the uninvolved to denote a concept from their ubiquitous paradigm in order to accentuate their attitude of alienation towards the subject and impose the corresponding worldview in general.

    both know computers..

BUT a geek does know their stuff.. but perhaps doesn't go on about it , or isn't obvious.. e.g. the folks behind sensi soft, you'd not think were sensi soft.

nerd.. would like to know.. sure knows xyz facts.. but not more tricky things.

having some retard biker repeatedly going "geek haha" when I picked up a speccy .. kinda got boring... yet the thicko didn't know where the toyota dealership was down the road (as it was a sat-nav black spot)

Reminds me of another Venn diagram I saw somewhere, which had the central intersection of geeks, dorks and dweebs marked "people who care about the difference between geeks, dorks and dweebs". :-D

If you care, you probably aren't whichever the cool type is.

A nerd is someone who is simply, socially inept. Inreasingly, these people have claimed they all have that self diagnosed fictitious illness - Asbergers Syndrome. They do this to justify their social ineptitude and hopefully escape ridicule.

Geeks are different. It's just a new word for what they used to call a hobbyist. Someone who is obsessional to any degree with a particular interest. I myself claim that I'm only 10% all natural Geek

geek - someone with a disproportionally large amount of knowledge about a relatively small or niche subject.

    - cats-eyes geeks, large hadron collider geeks, the albums of petula clarke from 1967-1971 geeks, etc...we've all met them.

nerd- I don't know. which probably makes me one.

Hello. My name is AY Chip. I have professionally diagnosed Asperger's Syndrome. Prepare to die.

I'm too handsome to be a nerd.

If I'm a nerd or a geek, then I need a new title. Warrior Nerd, or Battle Geek - cos I'm not a stereotypical one that is easily pushed about. Rather like the lesser spotted Warrior Wizard in Tunnels and Trolls.

"Neek" was a word I saw a few years back. to describe a cross between a nerd and a geek.

unfortunately it was often typed "n33k" which looks a bit...nerdy

Yeah, some quack will sign anything. Any halfway smart person can run rings around a psychologist. I've done it myself to get what I wanted. Funny how having Asbergers doesn't prevent people from having careers and making money. You'd think it would, what with not having the ability to communcate effectively with other people. Very select illness Asbergers. Having trouble reading cues and emotions in other people? The internet must be a blessing. Since I seem insensitive, maybe I have Asberger too. Thanks, thats me excused then, thank you for listening. I'd say sorry but I just don't realise. I think it's bollocks and that's my opinion.

I want to disagree with you, but having seen a few people using Aspergers as an excuse to be a complete bastard and/or as an excuse to get their own way, all whilst showing complete awareness of what they're doing and knowledge of how their actions would be judged by others, I'm undecided. I'm not a doctor so what do I know, but I do know when someone is taking advantage of a situation.

Nah, Asbergers is the only psychological diagnosis that annoys me. I travelled with a 'friend' once for about 3 months, and they had professionally diagnosed Asbergers..and after months of studying them, I came to the conclusion that they were a total fraud. then I've met dozens of self-diagnosed sufferers..didn't impress me much either. That's why I got a beef against it. Anything I say ain't gonna change medical practice is it.

It's good you've still got an open mind about it. My mind isn't open on it anymore..but so what eh.

Well, there ya go then. I've added my two cents to the definition of Geeks and Nerds. Sorry if it was too close to the bone and too close to home.

Hey, I'm not the one with social skills problems - no diagnosis (professionally obtained or not) here ;-)

Ok, I'm going to have to tell you that you're full of complete and utter bullshit. I didn't choose to have Asperger's (also note the spelling); nor did I attempt to convince the psychiatrist (not psychologist, don't confuse the two) of anything. Indeed before being diagnosed I hadn't even heard of Asperger's. Given the shit I had to go through to make myself outwardly at least vaguely 'normal', I rather wish I'd never had to hear of it.

Just because there are overwhelming numbers of 'fake Asperger's' on the Internet doesn't mean it isn't a genuine condition that some people really have. Also the reason some aspies have successful lives is because they succeed in overcoming their condition and integrating into society in spite of the idiotic prejudices of people like you.

Remember, just because you can't see mental conditions doesn't mean they're not real, you neurotypical-normative bitch.
