Strategy thrillers like Fourth Protocol?

edited August 2010 in Games
Were any realistic thriller games, apart from Fourth Protocol, released for the Spectrum?

I'm not talking about arcade game or platformers but rather strategic games with a realistic theme.

That is exactly the kind of game I was looking for. :)

Not 8 bit , but Floor 13 (Virgin Interactive) on the 'miggy is a superb game in the kind of style I think you're after.

Covert Action (Microprose) also for the Amiga is worth considering as well

    Hijack looks interesting.

Perhaps The Inheritance, Redhawk and Stifflip & Co.?

    Perhaps The Inheritance...?

Reminded me of Vera Cruz which is another game that would fit the description. There was a follow up as well if I remember correctly.

Thanks. Floor 13 does indeed look very interesting.

I think it's along the same idea karlth.

Yes, Prime Minister is possibly another though not got around to playing it yet.

Tbh if you're just looking for 'serious' games on the Speccy , irrespective of what genre , there absolutely tons. Try

Theatre Europe - nuclear strategy-lite game. Very atmospheric

Valkyrie 17 - an excellent text adventure

Elite - choose your role ; trader, bounty hunter, prospector, pirate - there are many moral decisions to make in this game

Shadowfire - a real-time icon driven adventure ; can you rescue the President in less than 1 hour?

ID - Verry clever this one . Win the trust of your computer and help to unravel it's tangled mind by asking a series of probing questions.

Alien (Argus Press) - Based on the film , and arguably the best 'Aliens' licenced game to date.

Slaine - a little like Stifflip & Co , but with a 2000ad licence. The control system will either leave you felling its genius or broken , but brilliant concept either way.

It's a great game , and very much an underrated classic (nno one I know had even heard of it). VERY simple control system , but a game with lots going on behind the scenes. Very re-playable too , as there are several possible scenarios to play through

Yes PM is a simply superb game , but I would say very much a game for fans of the show. If you don't (or didnt) watch the show , you simply wont get much of the humour , or the puzzles.

Similar tv-themed games (by the same people) include Adrian Mole and The Archers, both with multiple choice questions replacing type-in text. No way of 'dying' , just varying levels of success by the end of the game. Very expensive for what they were back in the day (not much 'progression' to be made and replayability limited) , I think Yes PM was ?15 on first release? But well worth a replay now if you're a fan of Yes PM/The Archers/Adrian Mole

you can always try armageddon man (I think that was the name of it...) where you try to avoid a nuclear holocaust with diplomacy

Yup, The Sidney Affair. Not a bad game, once you figured out how to talk to it. :)
  • I'm going to have to check some of these out. Of the ones mentioned I think I've only played a couple.

Slaine's control system was novel but it drove me up the wall and I didn't persevere very long with the game. I think that control method may have worked pretty well as a mini-game but for the whole game to be that unwieldy is a bit much. At least for me.

Interesting that Stifflip was mentioned, as it was developed by the same company that did Fourth Protocol...
