Making a gif screenshot

edited November 2003 in Emulators
I want to make some .gif file pics of screenshots from Speccy games. Is there an emulator that lets me do this?

I imagine that any modern one would these days. Fuse will allow you to save to PNG files (patent-free!).

PNG's are better than GIF's because a) they are not plagued by royalties (see http://www.burnallgifs.org ) and b) 99% of the times they are significantly smaller than GIF's. However, saving an image with a transparency layer in PNG can be a bit of a hassle - I have not yet fully understood how the transparency works in PNG files, they seem to grow bigger than a corresponding GIF. Neither, as far as I know, it is possible to replace animated GIF's with PNG's.

Several emulators let you save a screen dump in bitmap format, but most of the times you have to cope with GIF's, PCX's and BMP's, so if you need to convert them into PNG's you will need an external program. Fuse is the only emulator I know that is able to save screen dumps directly into PNG's.

So, can anyone suggest a Windows emulator that will do this? I can't find one. ZX32 certainly doesn't, and ZXplus doesn't work.

Just hit the PtrScrn (Print screen) key, which will grab a copy of the desktop, open windows paint, or your favourite graphics package (cos it wont be paint! ;)), and hit Ctrl-V to paste the copy of the desktop as a bitmap into your art package. Then crop the image and save in whatever format you like! :)

Or Ctrl+C in Spectaculator (Edit->Copy) to skip the cropping bit.

Under windows I use either Speculator or Spin to grab screens as .scr files and then convert them with scr2gif.

The problem with going through a .scr file is that you will lose any rainbow effects which are present on the screen when you grab it. You will get to keep any FLASHing effects, but I'm not entirely convinced this is an advantage :)

This is true but the great advantage for me of going through a .scr is that the material submitted to WOS is kept in synch. i.e. every tape I produce a loading screen for gets both a .scr and .gif file.
