DVI Confusion
My new pc arrived yesterday to replace my ancient and dead pile of 2005 bits. I was due one last year but did not happen, have been saving for a year.
Anyway, the supplied DVI lead with the monitor does not fit the graphics card :-?
They are both DVI but the socket on the card is different. I rang them up (the supplier) and they said something along the lines of it means that the card / monitor are not a suitable match / compatible.
To be fair the pc has onboard too, and it would fit that but I wanted a separate card.
If I had known I would of made sure it would fit, shame the ordering system was intelligent enough to only allow you to specify most things that were compatible but not clever enough to spot this card vs this monitor. At the moment I'm using a normal d-sub type lead.
My camera is broken otherwise I'd get a pic, but a quick Google:

Basically, the graphics card has the lower of those sockets, the one with the 'four holes' where as the lead and the monitor has the other one with the 'slot' instead of the four holes. :-?
Now, my question:
The monitor and the card both have a HDMI socket :) , so I'm thinking to get a HDMI cable instead ? , or should I try to find an adaptor for the DVI if there is such a thing.

I've got a DVI GFX card and I also bought a cable to connect the DVI to the HDMI port on my 1080p telly. I simply cannot get any kind of a sharp picture on it though - I was hoping to get a 1920x1080 resolution.
Has anyone had any success in getting this to work? I did read that you had to alter timings, tried and got nowhere with that.
Cheers for any help.
Thanks Winston. I take it I've read that correctly in that there is such a thing as a DVI cable with the 'four holes' at one end and the 'slot' at the other ? :)
Although I am wondering if I have to spend any money on a cable I might as well get a HDMI one, both of those sockets look the same size, hopefully I cannot get it wrong.
I have to go out this afternoon anyway so will have a look around. Probably PC World as I have to go past that on my travels.
TBH I would go for the HDMI connection as (THBOMK) there are only 2 variations, the standard size and a mini version. Easy to tell the difference.
A cheap HDMI cable is as good as forking out a fortune so go for one ?5 or less and not one of the ?30/40/50 ones - they do not give any better results on my full HD monitor or TV either for games or movies. They did sell short (1m?) ones in poundland (or similar, can't remember offhand) and they work perfectly.
PC World will rip you a new one for a HDMI cable, check the prices on Amazon first to see what I mean.
Got a new 2 metre HDMI lead for ?7, looks good quality :) , its a bit of a squeeze though as the graphics card (well, the case) is up against the port.
I mentioned to the man on the counter (have dealt with him before, he's very knowledgeable) said the DVI lead should fit and if not you can get a VGA adaptor, although that kind of defeats the object I think.
Anyway conclusion: HDMI working fine. :)
Might be best to start a new topic with this to avoid confusion :)
Your monitor is DVI-D only (digital) and so doesn't have the pins for the analogue input.
I'm not sure /WHY/ they'd make it so the cable won't plug in. I would have thought they'd just use a full connector and not wire up unused pins on a socket, but there we go. apparently not.
Your card and screen will work together if you could plug the cable in, as you are using digital video those four extra pins aren't carrying a signal anyway. If it was me I'd have a go at butchering the connector cutting the pins out so it would fit :)
I've never seen a DVI-D only cable (everything of mine just has a DVI-I socket even if it doesn't use all the pins) and as has already been said, buying individual cables you always get gouged.
Will do :-) Bit naughty of me to hijack this thread.
I don't mind you doing that though :) , just thinking will be easier for others to follow and they won't mix my replies into yours, which may make it more confusing.
My issue is solved now anyway (although I did notice no audio until I realised I had to find the audio: line in / hdmi switch in the menu) and move it back to line in) , all good anyway :)
