Gay Shot
Well, today I was having a quick browse of 2010 software to see what this year has brought us so far, and I noticed this game 'Gay Shot'
http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0025163
Now I don't speak much Russian but this poorly programmed doodle appears to be what it sugggests in the title, shoot gay men. If you don't you'll end up buggered.
Now I'll confess, I hate this kind of thing. I find the content pathetic. But there is an argument that says an archive should include everything warts and all. An Archive is a record of the awful as well as the best. But then there might also be a minimum quality standard and Gay Shot is also a very poor programme even if you put the subject objections to one side.
In short, does anyone think Gay Shot dserves its place in the archive or does it cheapen the whole of WoS by its inclusion?

Ridiculous to create something like this. But yeah i can see why its in the archive, good or bad i'm sure theres other bad taste demos there also
We catalogue anything and everything, be it poor or great.
How else could my own feeble attempts ever get included?
EDIT: the adult section is specifically excluded from the robots.
Yep i'll never play Jack and the Beanstalk again
Homosexual that he just cannot come to terms with haha! GAYSHOT!!!
whatever next....
No, see, the WoS archive is a library. By alluding to rights, you are getting muddled. There needs to be a quality threshold or every
10 PRINT
style thing should go into the archive.
And that would only muddy the Spectrum history for future researchers who would have to wade through hundreds on GO TO 10 style gags before finding anything of interest.
PSJ's point is, to me, the more valid defence as he sees some talent in the animation that is worthy of archiving.

Yeah, put it in the archive in the adult section with all the other sicko curiosities. They'll be tame and funny to the masses one day! In fact, we're currently not far off all the high-street games looking like, "Gay Shot."
to silence other opinions/points of view is in no way democratic,
that would be church-like: dogmatic.
(one truth that rules 'em all :) )
so I find it O.K. to preserve even such blatant mockery and abomination - it's up to one's wits, brains and reason to judge it and debate about it's value.
it's like with crusades - no one ever tried to erase and forbid mentioning this 'legal' mass killing blessed by man in white robe.
it's O.K. to keep records of it so others would know.
(and so it's ok to f**k little boys, when you're a priest... :P )

Hate speech is "Speech not protected by the First Amendment, because it is intended to foster hatred against individuals or groups based on race, religion, gender, sexual preference, place of national origin, or other improper classification." -- Websters.
So if you're not worried about WoS Infoseek being lumped in with neo-Nazi sites and so on, and are not concerned about the reputation ranking of the WoS servers, then there's no need to act. Otherwise I'd put hate speech titles like this in a non-public archive as is done with the ones for which distribution permission has been explicitly denied. There may be some historical merit in showing that the ZX Spectrum was used to spread hate speech I suppose, but there is no good reason to make such titles publicly available.
well, as for me - the animations are superb! - which is one of the few (if not only) bright moments of this little.... experiment (?)
even implementation of sound and border effects appeals to me.
the game lacks body/points counter... and perhaps digestible idea.
(changing those amphibian creatures into aliens or anything would do the job).
taking these into account - the game would fit in the pre-PC gaming production as any other standard stuff.
so - apart from agressive homophobic tone of this game I quite enjoyed the gameplay.
(but only got 13 queers at most... it's tough to beat the score in first level, so I can't judge if the game is really horrible or it gets better level by level...)
can't be bothered to feel offended by politically incorrect game topics... what a waste of time.
Probably our century cultural distinctions affect, I ask applications if whom has offended by the own words.
And you are muddling quality with standards.
The British Library archives every book published regardless of the QUALITY. After all, it has novels by Katie Price as well as works by William Shakespeare, and for an archive it is important to archive EVERYTHING.
I agree that it should be labelled as adult, but it shouldn't be excluded on the grounds that you don't like it.
I suggest not to discuss idea, and to discuss game process
If we remove games about gays what next should we remove?
Raid over Moscow or Green Beret as it's hatred against Russian nation?
Three Weeks in Paradise as it uses offensive stereotype of Negro, with a bone in his nose?
Games which say Indian instead of Native American or Eskimo instead of Inuit?
Games in which you hunt animals?
Games in which a muscled guy rescues a sexy girl as it's sexism?
I could go on further and further...
It was me who uploaded the Nazi camp game and at beginning I was not sure about it. But now I think it's a part of Spectrum history. And blocking some sites which store such content for historical reason? You should start with blocking Wikipedia then.
Blue Coat proxies - proprietary hardware that is blatantly expensive and under powered, and automatically take a blacklist feed from the IWF.
25 year old software is not high on the list of content to be filtered. What's available on the internet changes from day to day, hence some poor souls are paid to surf and update the IWF blacklists.
Ralf,
It only game.
I reckon if your not mentally disturbed, your not going to want to kill someone for discussing this topic. Society rules and customs (Laws) should stay local, to represent the population. Not be foistered onto the rest of the world where it makes no sense.

On it policy discussion, I consider, it is possible to finish.
True, WoS is never going to make the top 100,000 visited sites list for any given country. However, you have failed to address the question of whether it's a good idea for WoS to distribute hate speech or not. I'm not saying don't preserve it, I'm not saying don't have an entry in Infoseek. I am suggesting it might be prudent not to distribute it, and to mark it as hate speech in the Infoseek entry.
If there was a game where you only killed people of a certain colour, say anyone who was black a lot of people would think its racist and a terrible game.
The thing is the animations in this game are great, but why oh why do you have to shoot gay people ? Why not just anyone ?
I mean one minute you have gay friends, next minute apparently you know every single gay person in Russia as the majority are all aggressive ?
I mean this is just stupid and bigoted.
I can see both points of preserving everything there is on the Speccy but a stupid game about shooting gay people ? Dont think its worth preserving, no one in 100 years time will think 'look at this amazing piece of work...' etc.
Shame as the game is great but what its about is stupid in this day and age.
Like button! :)
Andrew could be right, preserve but don't distribute.
Just think though, if its okay to include a game like this where does it end? where do you draw the line?
Come on people, in a hundred years do you really want people thinking spectrum users played things like this?
Times like this I'm glad i'm not a Mod coz with comments like ' deserved hatered ' I'd be hitting the ban button left right and centre.
