Swiv

edited January 2011 in Games
So I've just been playing (and reviewed SWIV).

Good game if you like vertical shmups. For me it's a classic from the twilight years of the Speccy - it had all been done before by this point but it's not bad!

Thoughts anyone?

An excellent game, I completed it last year playing it on my +2A...the keys are a bit strange (Enter instead of "p"), but you can get used to it.

Very nice playability, sound and graphics. Silkworm is also a very nice game.
  • I remember having an argument at school with someone who thought it stood for Silkworm 4. I don't know if i played the spectrum version but i remember the Amiga version continuously loading the next part of the level so the disk drive would whir the wholetime you were playing. I agree that Silkworm was also a very good game.

I didn't even know it existed, as I don't know much about Spectrum games from the early 90s... some day I will check infoseek for games from these years.

Watching the video it seems nice... I must give it a try!

It was developed by the team that did the Silkworm conversion, but is not an official sequel even though it features a helicopter and a jeep. Silkworm 4 was just a working title/joke, and they came up with the abbreviation SWIV (Special Weapons Interdiction Vehicle) later.

well there is no arcade machine, but the sales curve team did a great job on all versions of silkworm :)

one of the few games I rate and will go back to on amiga.. I do think zzap were a bit stink with the c64 scoring though.

Also IV = 4 in roman numerals, so SWIV could be interpreted as SilkWorm IV.

And as Infoseek suggests, also 'SilkWorm In Vertical'... curious...

Yeah, as I just said on your blog...a great game! As was the original Silkworm too....

According to Microhobby, If I am recalling not very bad :D , this game was the sequel to Silkworm. Anyways a very good game that every arcade lover should try!

it's a bit like vindicator was supposed to be green beret 2 , remember the adverts?

    Cheers for the thoughts all.
For me it is one of those games that proved (at the time) that there was a little life left in the old Speccy just yet.

It's just that machines like the Amiga were ideal for this sort of game and the poor Speccy just couldn't quite keep up. Great version though!

Again, it's not an OFFICIAL sequel, it's just inspired by Silkworm.

Now, that's a different case, because Ocean actually used the name in the advertising (and on the loading screeen if I remember correctly?)

Mmm and If I dont recall badly, again, at some point in the game (menu, ending...) it appears Silkworm in Vertical.

Also, according to the WoS entry, the game belongs to a series with Silkworm.

It's memorable for me as it's one of the few games I first played on the Acorn Archimedes!

Never played the speccy version (yet) though.

Good game on the 'miggy for the super-smooth graphics , but not great gameplay

Take away the graphics (and the sound) and you're left with a bland - frankly boring - shoot-em-up devoid of any invention. Not the worst game ever , but nowhere near as good as the hype. Flying Shark and Terra Cresta were far better vertical shooters imho.

That Archimedes version looks bloody impressive!
  • edited January 2011
A lot of Archimedes games did look impressive. My A-Level IT teacher brought games in on occasion including Lemmings 2.. My old school had PacMania and Terramax. One person I know had a Gameboy emulator for it and before soon, copies of the program and Wario Blast made the rounds.

    Kempston Mouse versions

This totally changes the gameplay... its a completely new and MUCH easier game... it looks like the helicopter is jumping from one spot to the other when using the mouse in these... bad :(

It's brought back a lot of memories for me. (Sorry this is a bit off-topic).

I never actually owned an Archimedes as they were a bit esoteric for me, plus I had very little money at the time.

Never used one at school or college and even in university in the early '90s, they were still using BBC microcomputers.

But I did have this one mate who lived in Liecester who had an Archimedes, and I used to visit him, I always played on it.

He had Pacmania too and also "Chuck Rock" and the BBC emulator, which I think was supplied as satndard? In any case, this was around the 1992/1993 time frame and I'm pretty sure it's the first time I ever used a 32-bit home computer. (Although I had used a Sequent Symmetry mainframe back in 1991 which was also 32-bit, but a lot more expensive!)

Yes, DO THIS. I wonder how long that added to the loading time?
