Covering your hardware...

edited February 2011 in Chit chat
Hey, you WoSsers remember "back in the day" people would have special covers for their printers(typewriters) or even computers?

I remember these dinky soft-plastic covers for the old Apple Macintosh computers, that would slip and completely cover the monitor/computer.

You just don't see that anymore, right? The only thing I have covered is my scanner because I don't use it that often(a few times a year) but I like it tonnes so want to keep it clean and dust-free for my next use. My collection of typewriters all come with covers so I don't have to implement any special considerations there.

Do you take any special dust-free precautions for your hardware?

EDIT: Sidenote, I tried to look up special slip-covers for computers and had to come up with this search-string to weed out irrelevant things:
slipcovers for computers -furniture -sofa -cd -couch -map -seater -table -casual -suede -"sure fit" -loveseat -comforter -duvet

EDIT2: And I do remember these old neighbours who actually knitted a cover for their (yellow/green) monitor+computer. The monitor was sat upon the computer, and the cover covered both the monitor and computer. Do people actually still do that? I mean plop the monitor on top?

I always liked with the idea of getting a cover for my VIC 20. By the time we got our +3 I don't think anybody was thinking about dustcovers any more.

I got arrested for Public New Deity

well I bought a speccy with a dust cover.. kept it in really good conition.

although did look very 1970's ish. see thru plastic, and a crap brown surround.

I have a philips monitor with a dust cover.. was in mint condition.. which I STUPIDLY lent to a friend.. and the **** got it scratched and then said.. "oh I'll buy it off you".. told him he was a **** and thats why he'd damaged it and I took in back straight away incase he damaged it any more.

I used to cover my computers and stuff, but they'd only be used for a few weeks before I wouldn't bother covering them anymore, so now I just don't bother at all.

You can still get covers for the rubber key here even if they are a bit pricey

That looks interesting ... I just wish they had a pic of it on an actual Speccy ... I'm one of those gits who needs an "in action" screen-shot.

EDIT: Is it a cover that just "sits" snugly on top of the speccy (tuc-in corners perhaps) or is this like a wash-cloth "Let's Slip Into Something More Comfy, eh?" kinda fingy?

Its hard to tell, theres two, one of which has visible sewn corners which would suggest a "tucked in" variety, I suppose someone would have to get one and have a look!

As I never saw an specific cover for the speccy, I used to cover it with a surplus cotton and put away inside the speccy box. I was a very orderly boy!

But I must reckon it was very crappy.

I wear a cover for myself when I'm not in use...
    So far, so meh :)

I used to use them...and had actually been thinking about acquiring one for my Amiga and c64 which are always left out....figured it might help preventing 'yellowing'.

I suspect the reason they are not so popular anymore is the value of the equipment is more 'disposable'. A keyboard is $20, the PC is under the desk, black, swapped out fairly regularly etc...it's not an item you expect to love an cherish as the early computers were...it's now a tool/appliance.

The point about "yellowing" is a good one ... I guess it's not as much of an issue now with better/different plastics/materials.

Plus the other point being that computers nowadays are in constant, daily use, not just for the occasional game of Solitaire or swapping cookie recipes.

What's wrong with swapping cookie recipes???!?!?!??!!?!!?!?
