Any plans for the ZX81's 30th "birthday"?

According to Wikipedia the ZX81 will be 30 years old on the 5th of March.

I'll certainly play a few ZX81 games on that day. :)

My first ever computer and I still have fond memories. I will be up for a ZX81 marathon for the day.

Site back up and running now - the webhost took all my sites down without warning, as one of the email accounts had been hacked and used for spam - I have lodged a complaint as they should have at least tried to contact me, rather than just taking everything off line!

We are working on the final details of what will be on the ZXPander - keep your eye on the ZX80/ZX81 forums - http://www.rwapservices.co.uk/ZX80_ZX81/forums/ for news...

We may be releasing a game and a library to code games for the ZX81 using z88dk.

    We *may* be.

I had considering releasing my ZX81 port on the anniversary, but there is little point really, as it is a Speccy release.

I've got a couple of ZX81 games under development so I might be able to release one of them for the anniversary. Mind you, real life could very easily intervene and stop that so I won't promise anything just yet.

T1K and Lazyfrog are available now, as is DOMIN8TR1S.

I could get VIRUS out by then, but unfortunately, I'm unable to test it until I can get hold of a bloody 16K RAM pack!! It'll probably be OK.....!

So, what (if anything) did you do to mark the anniversary? I played a few ZX81 games and reminisced about the good old days of rampack wobble and type-ins. :)

Here's to the next 30 years!

I tried to finish off one of my games but failed miserably. Hopefully it'll be done before the next anniversary though.

I had a few games of 3D Monster Maze on Saturday. Amazed that the "Footsteps approaching" and "Rex has seen you" prompts still give me the *****s to this day!

That game is so damned atmospheric, isn't it?! Definite proof of the "less is more" approach to horror/suspense.

I once toyed with the idea of doing a Specy port of 3DMM, with sound and "improved" graphics, but I honestly doubt the ZX81 version could be bettered. Even the "mists of time" bit where the maze generation takes 30 seconds to complete instead of being near instantaneous (which is entirely possible, as somebody once patched it to do...) adds to the overall atmosphere. Best ZX81 game of all time, that. :)

Russell Marks emulated it on a Speccy back in 1997. The mists were speeded up, though.

I think it was him who patched the ZX81 version to remove the mists of time delay (IIRC, the maze generation was being done in BASIC in the original for no apparent reason). Very impressive, but the game actually loses a certain something without that delay.

The ZXPand (finally decided on the name of this interface) is now nearing completion - latest photos of the motherboard appear at:

    http://www.rwapservices.co.uk/ZX80_ZX81/forums/zx-mmc2-the-zxpand-update-log-t329s100.html#p3577

It is designed to fit in a Memopak case.

The manual for the unit appears at:
