LA Noire...

edited June 2011 in Chit chat
I didn't even know about this until Mile mentioned it a while back. For those who don't know, it's Rockstar Games' next release, it's a detectivey adventurey kinda thing, set in 1940s Los Angeles, and it looks awesome. I've just watched the video on this page, pretty astounded at the facial capture work...

Can't wait to get my grubby mitts on this...

I heard that it's alot like Mafia II in that it's set in a big world, but it's pretty much empty and linear and not at all like the GTA games. I could be wrong though, but it does look pretty good.

Which reminds me, I still need to buy Mafia II ;-)

I'm looking forward to it too.

Like the idea of the mystery & facial expressions, will be interesting to see if you can see if people are lying etc.

It's on the 'wanted list' with Skyrim & some others...

Bloody hell - that's incredible! That was the next step in games as up until very recently people's faces didn't look all that realistic but what they have done here is brilliant.

Aye I remember thinking Rockstars Bully = Skooldaze.

Does LA Noire = Sam Cruise?

Indeed. I really hope this face capture thingy isn't "owned" by Rockstar, and therefore used exclusively by them... it'd be great to see what other people can do with it too.

Well, it's just shot to number one on my shopping list!!

It is coming out on PC right??

I'm not sure actually. I assume it'll probably be the usual case of it coming out on PS3 and 360 first, and then onto PC later on, like the GTA IV series. Having said that, I don't think Red Dead Redemption was realeased on PC.

    Gah!

So, let's prepare for a worse case scenario.

Which mate do I need to buy some beers for and go around their house to play this game? One of the ones with an Xbox 360 or one of the ones with a PS3? Are there different models of these machines and if so which is the tip-top one so I can find out if any of my mates have one and isolate them as "bestest bud"?

Yeah, I'm looking forward to this, it looks effing ace.

Should keep me going at least part way until Skyrim :)

Better start saving those few extra $ every week for this, the more I see the more I like, and I wanna be up to date with a Rockstar fanboy game on here instead of getting pity replies from all you lot 3 years after you've all finished it :D

Here's a new video, all looking rather good so far:

    http://www.rockstargames.com/lanoire/#!/video:6641

But, like Miner Willy said in another thread, we don't know what it plays like, so it could be crap for all we know.

Oh, who am I trying to kid, it's gonna be teh awesomeness... :p

It's just that i think games have gone completely in the wrong direction. Why do a game have to be like a movie? If i want to watch a movie that's what i do, if i want to play a game that's what i expect to do when i load a game.

Worst example was with some sonic racing game for the kinect. Videoclip after videoclip that couldn't be skipped past. Me and the kid got tired of it before we got to play it and loaded up another game instead, it hasn't been touched since. Really, it's a racing game, it don't even need a plot for feck's sake!

Very true. But this is an adventure game, that appears to rely heavily on reading the emotions and physical "tells" of possible murder suspects so, in my opinion, narrative and clever face-capturing are extremely important to the actual gameplay. For (a very poor) example, I've got a poker game for the original Xbox in which you can adjust your facial expressions, allowing you to bluff etc.. Your opponents can also do this, but the expressions are so hideously poor that it's hard to tell whether someone's making out that they're happy or scared, or on the lavatory (seriously, the expressions are that bad).

Sounds like it has potential to be so bad it gathers a massive cult following ;)

Like the Showgirls of Xbox games

It's really reeeeeally bad. Sometimes when players are supposed to be happy, they instead look as though they're wincing in agony. The expressions thing is a good idea, but the execution of said idea leaves much to be desired.

It was the official WPT poker game too, you'd have thought they'd make more of an effort...

Exactly. The problem with story-telling in a videogame is that it can really only ever compliment the game. There have been a few attempts at multi-stranded story-games (much like the old "choose your own adventure" books but with shooting/running-around instead of turning the pages) but most story-games have linear narratives. Unfortunately, this can sometimes mean the story getting in the way of the gameplay (I seem to recall some of the Metal Gear Solid titles were particularly notorious for this). It also means that gamers can't tell their "own" stories in their heads - something narrative-free titles like Minecraft, Angband, Spelunky and some sandbox titles are good for.

Another problem with story-games is that some developers think the story and the pseudo-cinematics are more important than the gameplay. There seem to be some gamers with the same attitude (I've seen "critiques" of games that never mention the gameplay once). This makes me a sad bunny.

One of the most annoying instances I saw was a zombie game for one of the current-gen consoles (can't recall what game, alas). The game had the player in a mall full of zombies and the likes of lawnmowers (lawnmowers, for ****'s sake, they clearly had the right ideas of what makes a game fun in there!) to run riot with and score combos and the like. But, when starting a game, it becomes clear that rather than let the player run riot the developers were more interested in telling a motherflipping story instead and introducing us to the cast of B-movie grade characters.

And, an example I often give, if you want to see what's gone wrong with games in the last decade or so play the first five minutes of Doom 2 and compare it with the first five minutes of Doom 3. The former: shoot monsters! The latter: wander around a base going where some voice tells you. You don't even get a gun for about half an hour ffs!

Certainly does. I've just recognised a couple of the actors in it too. One of them was in The Sopranos.

I think I recognise at least three of them from Mad Men too.

New video: "Rising Through The Ranks"

I've pre-ordered this from Play.com. You get a bonus case, "Slip of the Tongue" and a link to download the soundtrack: http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/13647136/L-A-Noire/Product.html

The pre-order perk here from Best Buy I think (US equivalent of PC World) is "The Sharp-Shooter Suit", whatever teh fook that is?

It's literally just a suit for your character to wear, if I remember rightly. The pre-order that Daren mentioned is the only one with an actual extra case/mission, that'll be the one I go for.

I think there are actually 2 bonus cases and 2 "add ons" that you can get via pre-order depending where you pre-order from

Rockstar have teamed up with a book company to create 8 short detective stories which expand upon the world of L.A. Noire.

    http://www.rockstargames.com/lanoire/features/stories//

The first story is available to view free on the above page, the rest will be available in the coming weeks as the game is released.

Also, the game comes on a whopping 3 disks for the Xbox 360 (1 blu ray for PS3): http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2011/05/06/l-a-noire-on-xbox-comes-with-3-discs/

“L.A. Noire was always going to be a massive game, from the size and detail of the world to the length of the cases, and of course, the sheer amount of MotionScan data required for the faces of over 400 actors in-game. To tell the story and make the game we wanted to make, we knew that it was going to take an entire single layer Blu-ray disc and three Xbox discs.”

"players will only need to swap discs twice at natural breaks between cases without interrupting the flow of the game.”

See? If Rockstar can release a two-disc game for the 360, then why can't Quantic Dream release Heavy Rain on the 360? Grrrrr...

Really looking forward to LA Noire now though. I've given up watching trailers and gameplay videos though as they seem to contain lots of spoilers.
