GAME have finally done it...

edited March 2011 in Chit chat
I was looking in my local branch of GAME this weekend, just having a general mooch to see what I could see. I'm kind of on the lookout for Killzone 3 and it's one of those games that I think will be cheap soon enough, so I'm waiting for it to drop in price a little.

I noticed that GAME had a pre-owned copy, so i had a look at it, expecting to see a price of ?37.99 (as usual for a new release pre-owned), but I was surpised to see that it was priced at ?39.99!EXACTLY the same price as a new copy :-o It wasn't even a tld version, it was the normal edition. It wasn't even a penny cheaper!

I know company's need to make a profit, but charging the same for a pre-owned copy as a new copy is a little bit cheaky, esp as the pre-owned one will have a nice profit margin anyway (I can't see them paying any more than ?25 or ?30 for a trade in if they were feeling generous)

I never used to shop at Game anyway, very rarely I'd buy anything from there, they've always been a bunch of money grabbing basts

That's nothing. In Gamestation, I saw CoD: Cack Ops for ?43 second hand. I'm pretty sure they have it for ?40 brand new?! :-?

Recently ASDA were selling Red Dead new @ ?25 and used @?30. They do it quite often. I don't think they have got the hang of selling used games yet from the number of people I know that have seen similar deals. They don't seem to account for any special offers they have on which makes the pricing look silly. Another one they did was selling the BluRay copy of House series 6 for less than the DVD. That lasted for a couple of days until they dropped the DVD to a couple of quid cheaper.

Like most places Gamestation can be very cheap IF your very selective. Normally there just 30% dearer than everywhere else (Except HMV who are always the dearest).

I keep an eye on hotukdeals.com which is the lazy way to pick up good deals.

I'm getting the misses a 3DS (late christmas present) at launch and there is over ?50 difference in pricing between the big names. Over ?20 on some games as well.

    (I've told this story before...)

I boycotted those useless buggers as well after they said they'd take a massive suitcase full of Commode games from me, and after I got on a bus with it and lugged it all the way through town they told me "No the guy on the phine must be mental, we've just binned a load of these the other day since nobody was buying them". Then they went on to tell me they'd just fired the guy who told me they'd take them and they weren't carrying Commode stuff anymore.

Even though they had a Commode in one of their locked cabinets for 40 quid with a tape deck and a joystick, and a load of what looked like tapes and cartridges.

Incidentally ADJB those Commode games are still yours if I ever make it back to England, dunno how I'll get them to Brum though?

I used to work in a large HMV and when customers brought their game collections in to cash in, I had real trouble looking them in the eye. 'Oh yes Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3, that you bought last week for ?45, we can offer you ?8 mint or ?5.50 non-mint.' Outrageous.

Also once we took pre-owned games in, and repriced them, that was their price, final. We didn't review everything we had after say, 6 months or so and alter the price according to age and how much we had. Nope, once it was processed our end that was it.

I used to run away from the till if I saw someone with large game collections come in...

It's always been a major irritation of mine the price of second hand games, so much so that I refuse to buy them any more unless they're 12+ months old and essentially in the bargain bucket. I like the fact that there is a second hand market but you're much better off buying and selling used games on eBay than using these sharks.

?2 off the RRP for something used is taking the piss IMO, and I don't care if it's a week old or 6 months old, it's USED and should be substantially, not slightly cheaper.

I was reading on C&VG last week that Game or Gamestation are going to introduce a pre-order system for pre-owned games!

The other think to consider with used games now is the fact that most games are being sold with DLC which you don't get if its a used copy. So your paying for the base game without DLC and yet nearly paying full price. With almost all console games and many PC games now being based mostly on the online part of the game rather than the single player aspect your value for money is even less than it was a couple of years ago as a lot of games are forcing registration to a single account which you can't get with the used game.

Given the price of new games now the only game I have bought at full price in the last few years has been SC2. Everything else has been bought a few months after release at a fraction of the full price. My personal price point for a new game is ?20 in exceptional circumstances and normally a tenner. I will also only buy games with substantial single player aspects and not even consider something like MW with its half hour single player content and everything else online. I refuse to pay the microsoft tax for the very few sessions I have on the Xbox and I can't get online with the PS3 unless I dump using the "other OS" which I don't want to do. At least with SC2 the Blizzard tax for battlenet is included in the price.

The publishers are trying to kill the second hand market by having more and more content that is only available to original buyers and this will just increase until the whole game is tied to a single online account making the used product useless.

Last week i was in Game and bought Bulletstorm, when i went to pay for it the guy behind the counter told me that i`d get a fiver off if i traded in Black ops, after a couple of shifty looks he produced a copy of said ops and swiped it as a trade in, "there you go mate,?34 quid ".

This must be a first, an actual decent assistant in Game.Mind you i bet they get seriously cheesed off with bone questions,no wonder they act like they can`t be arsed half the time.

I can't stand GAME, and won't use them anymore.

Phoned them up (the central "hotline") several months ago to check they still took PS2 Slim's in, as I had one kicking around. Yep, no problem, I was told. Took it into GAME in Eastleigh to be told that this particular GAME didn't take the slim PS2 and I would have to take it into the Southampton branch. Much ranting later I managed to get them to take it off me and THEY could transfer it to the Southampton store.

They've refused to take games that were scratched before, even though it was the same game that they sold to me in that condition just a week or so before! I've also found pre-owned games priced higher than the new copy, and when I question it they don't seem to find it odd, and won't do anything about it.

But I've lost count of how many times I've come out of GAME in a bad mood.

I miss the days of getting my games from Boots and WHSmith! ;)

i was once in game looking at some stuff, and a guy started chatting to me about FPS games. i was chatting away, when i realised that it wasn't an assistant, it was just a bloke.

luckily my GF came over and shoed him away from me. :p

    Finally??

Game and Gamestation have been doing that up here for ages. Game even tried to sell CoD:MW2 for ?30 without the cover or instructions.

This is why I buy most things on sale online :D

That wasn't your girlfriend, she was your carer. ;)

By the way, I saw her last week. She's still got the nervous twitch, but she's apparently stopped the suicide attempts. I tried to say "Hello", but she was mumbling to herself about and making slashing movements with her hands, so I just left her alone.

    I'm glad she's getting better.

Bulletstorm is one such game. It comes with a one off "on-line pass" code. Once that's been entered, that's it. You can buy another pass key from the online stores (800ms points or ?7.99 in the PS Store) if it's already been activated. UFC: 2010 also has one of these pass keys, but that's 400ms points to buy if it's already been used.

I used to work in Game, and it always used to annoy me when people brought games in and I could only offer them a few quid. I did start to hate it after a few weeks...especially all the guff you get told to say to customers. I've mentioned on here before about how crap the manager was at dealing with people too, and about how no-one could work out how I managed to sell more than the other people when I was out on the shop floor...

It was because I just ignored all the crap they told you to say and only approached people if they looked like they needed help, rather than pounce on them the minute they walked in the door...and I tried to be as honest as possible and tell them if there was a cheaper way for them to get their hands on something....

It is a big business though, and it's run as such...with people who have no idea running the show from an office in London...which is why I hated it and wanted to run off and open my own shop. One day.....

Is Bulletstorm an EA game? They've done that with the Dead Space 2 multiplayer. You need the online pass to play the multiplayer, but you don't need it for the story.

I bought the Limited Edition of it so I got the full pass. I've only put it in to get the Zealot Suit and Force Gun. Haven't looked at the multiplayer at all. And I won't look at it out of principle because of the pass ****e.

I've already payed for a 12month Live subscription to play games (that I've bought) online, I don't need to get permission from companies that feel the need to add another charge/stipulation on top of that.

Agreed! Wouldn't be as bad if it was free like PSN, but when you're already paying to play it sucks! I often wonder how many companies realise just how many gamers buy their stuff 2nd hand....they're obviously starting too! They say that it needs to be addressed as they don't get any money from 2nd hand sales, which is what Game dealt with mostly when I was there....

So why don't they force the stores to give them a cut from the re-sales, rather than punish the punters who actually buy the game by making them require codes???

yeah unfortunatly instead of selling the big ticket items and making a big profit that day, all you were doing was creating customer confidence and making the store more money in the long term. ;)

Yeah, and all I got for my troubles was an unwanted "high 5" from the Assistant Manager, who would actually go in a huff for the next week if you ignored his "high 5's".....God, I hated it..

I'm boycotting Game since they fouled up with an order last Christmas. We preordered Zelda: Spirt Tracks with a limited edition tin on the DS.. A foul up on their end meant our debit card was rejected. Got it all sorted out, spend a fortune on phone calls and in the mean time, they run out of tins. So we cancelled the order and got the game elsewhere..

To be fair to Xbox Live, it's a far better service IMO than the PS Network. There is more to see on the XboxLive dashboard (inside Xbox almost always has interesting videos to watch) ad that's included with the gold subscription. The PSN version is a per-per episode thingy that's total rubbish(I watched one once and it was a waste of time)

It's also easier and quicker to get into a multiplayer gae on Live too. I can normally connect to a gmae pretty fast on Live, but can sit around for ages on PSN trying to get into a room. Even with Sony's grade 1 titles, things are pretty slow (except when Uncharted 2 came out. That service was pretty fast)

You may pay for XboxLive, but I feel it's a much better service than the free PSN

Gamestation do tend to be quite expensive. I used to shop at a place called G-Force on Union Street in Glasgow but i haven't been in for a while.
I've used Steam for the last few games i bought.
