The kindest thing to do to that is unmod it.

at least it's got a half decent keyboard...

his plastic modelling skills leave a lot to be desired though.

I wouldn't even accept this as a gift... let alone pay money to get it.
    Looks like a misscariage of a zx81.

Why not try... fitting a computer [capable of running a nuclear power station] into an ice cream container!...

    All you need is:

    a ZX81 DIY kit
    a funky keyboard
a power lead with illuminated on/off switch
    scissors
    ice cream tub and lid
    optional nuclear power station

You might need to ask an adult for help with the scissors when it comes to cutting holes in the ice cream tub and lid...

Ugly, bulky, rubbish. Sadly this is the result of amateur hobbyists sticking their soldering guns into everything Sinclair / Spectrum... we need badly profi-guys that have professional background including machines to make things.

    I have two of those....

Alas mine are obviously the cheaper version since they only have the no. 8 on them ....

I think you're being overly unfair. I think the reason it looks ugly is the power supply sat underneath, and the badly cut ports. If the construction was a bit neater, and the power supply could be fitted into the same case I don't think there's anything wrong with that as a re-case.

The only good this "mod" is for, is perhaps those scairy SciFi movies of the 40's...

although if they cameo'd this in Sharktopuss, it would of perhaps really MADE the film!

to be fair, had there of been a thought to construction it wouldn't look so hideous.. the keys are OK, a nice white base would of been grand, and some stenciling would of made a nice looking re-housing...

but that.... well... I suppose it makes it functional.... if not an eyesore...

If I had a hammer, I'd hammer that ZX monstrosity. (having safely removed the PCB first of course!)

I think those keys are the ones with removable transparent top. Not that bad...
There exist however machines that really scared off space invaders.

Still it had a good friend once, who probably lost his spectacles and died hammering the keys.
Note that it features power-on and normal-video!

the "lab" type rack mount flight casing was probably worth more than the zx81

it looks like it could have featured in a 70's action series

which one of them red buttons launches the missle.hehe

I notice a large bid has been retracted with the reason "can't contact the seller" - more like the bidder read this thread then thought twice.
