The Hobbit:A guide and how i play it.

edited March 2012 in Games
Yes i know there are walkthroughs and guides on the net but what i want to do here is give chance for those people to complete the hobbit who have not already but in a way that can show you how interesting the game really is simply because because of the random element ie. the characters movements.I am hoping this guide may either gettting new players into the game or maybe entice people who have already completed the game the long way as in the guides and walkthroughs to have another go.
Why is this guide different?,you do not need to get the ring, use magic doors or even meet goblins-in fact you do not go that way at all,why go through all that to get into the cellars when the WOOD ELF can capture you and place you near the cellar anyway?,its far more interesting my way.
It may look long winded in txt but with the correct randomizing you will complete the game in a very short while (less than 20mins once you know your way around) so first some basic info then straight too it!.
Forget Gandalf anf Thorin as they are drones unless you end up in the Goblins Dungeon and we are not going that way,you will learn the WOOD ELF is the most important character in the game after Bard,we just need to meet the elf and let him capture us anywhere but `the forest road` which may well result in instant death.
This guide was created as i played using ZX32,i am not sure if the speccy keyboard layout is any different on any other emulator but , is shift+N and to speach marks for chat using " are shift +P ,to repeat the last command you typed in is ctrl+2 which is useful if Bard or Elrond become stubborn and you have to ask them for something twice.
In the guide below what you type in is in BOLD and i may use abbreviation- my comments and observations are in italic, remember that on the return journey you will not see location pics as they are drawn once (unless you type LOOK),i will not show them for any second visit.
If it works for you first time well done,if not do not worry because things change next attempt but i hope people enjoy trying it out and seeing how there can be slight differences each play and really give the Hobbit the credit it deserves. GOOD LUCK!.

(we need Elrond to read the map as some random selected location each play only appears after he does so ,example going E from mirkwood gate to reach the bewitched place and E from forest river to longlake may not be displayed in the location exits as Elrond did not give you directions,it may be the case that one of these locations is on our route so as a precaution give him the map and tell him to read it.If Elrond is missing or dead then a goblin has strayed from the mountains and killed/captured him be on your guard! as we can meet this goblin in the next 4 locations and Beorns house,Elrond if alive should also give you some food)

(This is the random element i mentioned earlier,we need to find the WOOD ELF and maybe he is right here then again we might have to go and look for him,E from this gate is the bewtiched gloomy place
bewitched.gif
and the river bank,S from this gate is the forest road. You are going to hate me for this but we need to wait around going backwards and forwards between the gate, bewitched place and forest road locations until we meet the elf.
If you go E from the forest road you will be on the forest path where the spiders are -this path leads to a waterfall which is a blocked end from this direction as it is actually used in the return journey, but if the elf is nowhere to be seen and you fancy it then you have to wait twice before moving otherwise the spiders drop down and sting you so its E,WAIT,WAIT,E,WAIT,WAIT,E and of course its the same heading back but goin W ,i suspect the wood elf starts the game from the waterfall at the end of this road so the chances of meeting him are high here but on the road he will capture you while you are doing the wait-wait patern and you will end up in the dungeon with a spider which kills you regardless [prog bug?],so hang around near the gate if possible and avoid the forest road)

[ONCE THE ELF CAPTURES YOU-CONTINUE READING]

[Dungeon]
(Finally we are here..
*if the Vicious Warg (Wolf) is here too then the elf has captured it HIT WARG WITH SWORD,if your attacks on anything in this game are repelled it is because your weak so EAT FOOD and try again.
*If the Warg is already dead that is because Gandalf has been captured and already delt with the problem
*If it is dark in the dungeon and when you move you fall and die its because you either forgot to pick up the sword from the Trolls cave or you broke the sword in a fight as the light from the sword lights the hobbits way.
*If something drops down and stings you then you were captured on the forest road with the spiders eyes watching you, this is bug if you excuse the pun.

We need to get out of the dungeon so we need to wait for the butler in the next room (cellar) to unlock the door from the other side which he seems to do randomly so wait around until someone unlocks the door.)

OP (open red door,if he closes it repeat the command until you get the better of him, there are two ways out W and SW we need to go for the latter.)

(Bard is located here and we need him to shoot the dragon if we encounter it which randomly seems to be from this location onwards so...when you do encounter the Dragon SAY TO BARD "SHOOT DRAGON" but we will be taking Bard with us so we need to carry him lol, drop him once the dragon is shot or else we will not be able to carry the treasure doh! )

Now we have to get back, remember the waterfall at the end of the forest road i mentioned earlier? well that is the route back but do not forget the WOOD ELF could now be a pain in the butt because he can be found on the forest path with the spiders so lets hope we do not meet him there if at all,if you do meet him keep moving unless he captures you before you can react which does happen. If the elf does capture us safely you still have to go through the business of throwing another barrel through the trap door and making your way back to the waterfall just to get back to where you was captured, this is the disadvantage of not having the ring.If i remember correctly the barrels in the cellar do run out to.

Well done!,if your new to the hobbit and this worked do not let it stop you from replaying and exploring more of the game or even trying to see if anything different should happen if you use this route again.

    What the?

It'd be quicker to read the novel! ;)

it was good that, its more tempting to play that with just a list of commands like in some guides.

I agree that the guide is good, and I didn't mean to come across as knocking it (the size of the post shocked me!), but personally I find following a guide defeats the object of why I'm playing a game in the first place. If it makes you want to play The Hobbit for the first time though, then it can't be a bad thing.

Maybe it should be put into a PDF and uploaded somewhere, rather than getting lost in the midst of forum time?

My only criticism was showing the end game screen, as (personally) I feel no need to ever bother playing it now. Which is tragic, as I was on the verge of loading it when I saw this thread. ;)

I'm old school and like to play games for the "reward" of the end screen. I suppose modern gamers play for "Trophies" or "Achievements".

I feel your pain. We've been robbed of the pleasure of completing The Hobbit on our own, and can never get that back again. :(

On the bright side, there are far better text adventures out there. :D

I remember when i completed it all those years ago I shot and killed the dragon with the bow not Bard. He was either dead or gave me the bow. I liked to do things differently.

I have finally managed to get around to making a video of me completing The Hobbit,i had good variance and completed the game in just 7 mins. 8)

When I played the game, I hadn't read the book and so blundered my way through most of it. Quite fun it was too to discover that the trolls died if you waited till dawn, that the cellar could be escaped by jumping onto barrels, the ring gave you the ability to disappear, among other things.

I believe I eventually killed the dragon by having it chase me to long lake where the bard was and then telling the bard to Shoot arrow at dragon or something like that.

Being a big Lord of the Rings fan, would it surprise you to know I've never played The Hobbit?

I always thought they were Gollum's eyes?

Sure, they are still there if you kill Gollum; but the game is full of inconsistencies.
  • edited March 2012
They aren't Gollum's eyes, Bilbo doesn't meet Gollum until much later in the book. Aren't they the giant spiders in the forest?

Bilbo meets Gollum in the Misty Mountains BEFORE he enters Mirkwood; both in the book and in the game!

    Tolkien describes Gollum, ""a slimy little creature, not larger than Bilbo with large, protuberant eyes";

Again, "He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes. "

"The hobbit jumped nearly out of his skin when the hiss came in his ears, and suddenly saw the pale eyes sticking out at him."

in the Two Towers, "A green light was flikering in his bulging eyes"

"Gollum could see in the dark. Bilbo could see the light of his eyes palely shining even from behind"

Gollum was following Bilbo from the mountains; I'm pretty sure the eyes were Gollum's; and he was trailing him in the forest, ready to jump out and kill him. That's one of the main themes of the story of the Hobbit and LOTR - Gollum following the ring around; staying just out of sight ready to pounce.
