people who had speccy's met women, and ended up getting married. :p
Not me! Not me! Give me liberty or give me death
The 30th anniversary should be something really special, whether it will be organized as a self-standing event or inside a more general (albeit still related to vintage computing) one.
Maybe an appearance by The Man himself, even a short one? Who knows.
I would try to have a stand at the next Replay show in Blackpool in 2012.
Last year they had about 2000 people, this year theyre aiming up to possibly 5000.
Biggest retro event in the UK, if there was a large stand there with various Sinclair bits it could be pretty cool
Doing one solely for the UK and booking some hall for 200 people could be a big risk. I know theres been a few Speccy meet ups (10-15 people) but i wouldnt risk booking a hall. Have a stand at the next Replay show and see how that goes ?
I have nothing against booking a stand at a Retro-Show. But this can Be only in Addition to a solely Spectrum Show.I mean,it is the 30th birthday of the Computer we all are interested in.We spent Part of our childhood with it,we learnt first steps of Programming on it,for some of us it is the major use of free time for 3 decades...it deserves more than a stand at a Retro-Show.
About the risk...that's the reason Why we start talking already now.We need to know how many people are willing to come.We need adresses of commercial sellers who want book a stand. And we need an organization team.
In all the discussion I heard nobody saying "yes,I do something".So ok,I am the first who want be a part of the organization team.Who joins me?

Well go ahead and organise one, but I expect you'll be disappointed. If you do a speccy show, only speccy peeps will come (or more likely not bother :p) Whereas a stand at a retro show you will get the people who came to see the Amigas or the Ataris or the Beebs etc etc too. For some reason the speccy scene seems rather hard to get out from behind the PC, thats why the meets are always just three men in a pub...

Well, you can blame it on the users who didn't appear or on the event itself.Maybe at the past shows there was nothing to attract people to come. Also we talk about an international meeting at a place (London?) easy to reach for everybody (cheap flights are nowadays available from nearly all countries). I remember 3 years ago at the Forever Show in Trencin I meet more UK people than obviously in pub-meetings in Uk.
Back in 1982,would you be the one to say "why building another computer? There are already some...".But Sir Clive had the idea to make a cheaper and better computer and now we should think about the best show ever and it will attract people. But we need any help.We need advertise the show everywhere. I don't want celebrate the Spectrum show with a lot of retro fans,I want celebrate with Spectrum people.
Maybe time for more people to assist in this task and not talk against.
I'm not trying to be defeatist, I just think, personally, that a Sinclair World at a retro show is a better use of my time and effort. If other people want to do a Sinclair Show then I wish them the best of luck. (and I'll be watching what happens with interest, and plenty of ketchup ready for any hat eating that might occur :-))
Still think it's a huge risk. See how the one next year goes and then maybe an independent one.
The risk depends on if here are more people posting simply "yes, great idea, I will come" or if it stays as now... However, the big Spectrum birthday is next year. We can arrange something small on the 31st birthday, but the 30th have to be great. If the UK scene is too lazy doing something, the event should be maybe not in London. I just offered a chance, but as it seems not enough people are interested.
I think this is a little bit a shame. I was last year on the Vintage Computer Festival, the tent with Sinclair items was by far the fullest and most people I met there were the same people who are writing here. So guys, you are here, you are reading this. Time for some action. I don?t ask for money, I ask for your assistance, your ideas, your support.

which tent was that? Winston and I were in the tent stuffed out of the way full of random odds and sods... like Dragons and Compukits...

I was there too and the Acorn area was busier than the combined Sinclair areas. Having said that VCF was a fun show and I hope they'll do another one at some point.
Here's my prediction: if I get the 100 pledges required and everyone pays up, then that's probably a good indication that there might be enough interest in the speccy to make a London show doable (and I'd recommend the ExCeL centre as the best [and cheapest] place to have it). However, if I don't get the 100 pledges (and therefore don't release the ROM and source), then I'd say that about wraps it up for any wider interest in the Speccy beyond those keeping the current scene on life support.
And some people on WoS, who shall remain nameless, are actively damaging what's left of the scene.

Yes, there was a Dragon Corner as well... who cares. There was RWAP and two other shops selling Spectrums and stuff, Chris Smith promoted his ULA book, Winston got huge interest in his Ethernet Adapter. I think more than hundred people posted a message on Twitter using Winstons Spectrum....
I don?t want fight, but I think if we can get a few more retro-sellers and as many visitors as in the Spectrum tent of the VCF, this would be a great event for the 30th birthday. I prefer to make a Spectrum party with just 100 or 200 Spectrum people, than meeting thousands of people at a retro show who have no idea about how much the Spectrum changed since 1982... I don?t say we shouldn?t appear on a retro show, but this is not what I want for the birthday party.
I wouldn?t be disappointed if there will be not so many people, but I would be disappointed if we don?t try to make a party for the 30th birthday. Think about when will be the next reason for a next big party? Who wants wait for the 40 or 50th birthday?

Although I don?t think that every Spectrum user who can be interested in a Spectrum-Birthday-Party is also interested in a free firmware, I support your idea and will spread the word to find more people. I will include it in the Newsletter of the Spectrum-User-Club, about 50 readers...

Thanks! I agree, not every user would be interested. However, I was extrapolating that if 100 people are willing to donate towards a new firmware, you might sell 1,000 tickets, which I think is the minimum you'd need to make it a viable event.
There was a lot of speccy stuff at VCF, it was all just a bit disjointed, spread all over the place.
That?s really true. But the good thing is that I met a lot of people from the UK Spectrum scene. Of course there was also a huge interest in Spectrums from people that normally support other retro scenes. I met a girl from Aberdeen who supported Gameboy, I showed her some Spectrum stuff and she bought a Spectrum +2 from RWAP. Also I met an italian guy who just bought a Spectrum and had no idea what it is. However, I like these people, they might bring us new sights and ideas, but for the 30th birthday I want all the game and demo programmers come by, I maybe want get Sir Clive for a visit and Matthew Smith etc. I want maybe Andrew Owen shows his new Firmware and maybe somebody who is not known yet, will show a Spectrum Clone using this firmware... dreams...or the future.
Don?t think Sir Clive don?t cares, he always answers my mails personally.

I would be very happy with 200 visitors, which would be then the biggest "Spectrum only" show I ever visited or organized. The biggest one I visited before was the Spectrum and Sam show once organized in Gloucester / Bletchley (the place were now SINTECH.UK is) back in 1994. There were max. 200 people, maybe less, and much was about SAM. The biggest Spectrum - Show in Germany had 50 people, the shows I usuall visit in Czech Republic have between 20 and 50 Spectrum-visitors.
Of course all these people I know in Germany and Eastern Europe will be informed. There are special sites were these people meet and I know them.
But still, not everybody likes travelling, so I count on UK people who will come to a Spectrum-show in their country.
Then you probably don't want to host it in London as you'll likely make a loss on it. Given the machine was launched in Cambridge that would seem a logical second choice.
Its worth talking to SirClive who is sometimes here and also a mod on the Retro Gamer website. Hes part of a team who runs Replay which has 2000+ people and is the biggest retro show in the UK.
Just get the word out there on other forums. I would start a thread/poll to see how many people from here would come to the show
I dont mean to be negative about it but i've been to a fair few retro shows in the UK and from personal experience the amount of Speccy fans seems to be quite low. I always expect lots of people from WOS but not that many turn up. Its a great idea, would love to see it do well

Yes,Cambridge might be a good idea.Another idea might be,to ask the people who organized the Vcf in Bletchley last year. The Spectrum is a big point in Britains computer history and Bletchley is a great place.Maybe it wont be even a financial risk there as the Bletchley Park would get the usual entrance fee and we can celebrate in the mansion...
for the 30th birthday I want all the game and demo programmers come by.
Will the demo group "The Unbelievables" finally release the best German speccy demo ever? I've been waiting for almost 20 years now Thomas, it is about time. If Fred doesn't deliver some FX that make my jaw drop, I'll have to ask MEZ to come out of retirement ...

At all we never announced something like that. TMG announced YLS (Yes Less Stupidity) and never released. Fred (Legend) is not anymore an active member of the group, but therefore joined Mic and Odin came in. However, we did one demo together which was maybe really our best work (although I think Megalomania is the best German Spectrum demo ever). But "Missing in fun" is really enjoyable and I made another work in 2006 called "Everlasting Love". Both have done it into the Pouet register: http://www.pouet.net/groups.php?which=2564
But yes, you are right... 2012 should be the year to release another great work. Mic and I are working on it since 2007 (well to say the truth, we worked maybe few hours on it and then forgot about). But all sources are here.
So if the show will happen, we will release also another demo and I hope many other groups do so as well.

That's a pretty good idea. Bletchley is well worth a visit in its own right, and that could draw in a few more people. Slightly tricky in that although TNMOC is on-site, it's not the same organization that runs the rest of Bletchley. Not sure who you'd need to talk to to make it happen.

YLS was a Talisman/Vision effort, and while Talisman made a TMG website I've completely lost track of Vision so that one probably won't ever see the light of day. As for Megalomania, you flatter me but it wasn't really special, none of the effects were anything that hadn't been done before. I think that accolade should go to NMI3 (excluding the lame TMG guest parts). Seems apart from anything released by the UVS, there hasn't been any German demo after about 1997 or so? Not like our scene was big to begin with.
I would start a poll to gather some interest from people here. You would think this is the 'main' Speccy site on the net so ideally you'll have lots of people saying 100% they would attend if there was a show.
If theres a slow response i would just be nervous in creating a Speccy only show.

02 phone shop more like :)
I used to be amazed at the PCW shows in London.. sadly looters trashed the public going to em... but as "trade" it was boring and full of suits
