I think there are dangers in working as a volunteer for an organisation, hoping that you might be able to apply for and get a paid job...

I have done lots of voluntary work over the years, but never been successful in getting a paid job doing the same or similar.

At the end of the day, if they give you a paid job, then they need to find a new volunteer, which is harder than finding someone to take on a paid role!

Mind you since I was made redundant in 2009, I have managed to make a living off of retro computers, so I am sure that others must be able to do it!

exactly, I don't expect to get a paid job at the Citizens Advice Bureau, I love working there and am developing genuine transferable skills. I've found something, somethings even, that I am good at too.

What I will not do, is leave that, or do less there, in order to work for free elsewhere with the vague notion of one day getting paid work at the new place.

Hopefully, I will get a part-time job, and can carry on doing voluntary work at the CAB.

I get the impression sometimes they've already got someone in mind for the position but have to advertise to be seen as not hand-picking people they want (like that police fellow in the papers was accused of)..

It's true. At a certain employer I know, someone needs a promotion because they are basically working above their grade. But this person cannot be promoted because the unions will see it as giving him a payrise, when their members haven't had one and will go on strike, so they have to advertise his promoted role (so he applies for it).
