If he doesn't get stung then eating the honey should restore Crusoe's stats.

    The engraved boxes:
    Spoiler:

Remember that Crusoe has to get back home to finish the game.

Any chance of tracking down the rather unusually named Jon Smith?

Here's my final version of the corrections for Crusoe (48k Spectrums only). The code in the three program downloads available on WoS is identical, so these corrections will work with any of them.

If you're playing from a snapshot then just load it, apply the changes, then walk to another section of the map. This will fix the stack and the corrected version can then be saved. In the unlikely event that you're using the in-game save feature, then load both the program and the saved game before applying the changes as above.

The 25th box is on the island in the next map segment East of the stockade

Remember that Crusoe has to get back home to finish the game.

I can't see any sign of this 25th box (thanks for pointing out my misreading of the carved cross BTW - I stared at that thing so many times that my eyes were swimming!) on the screen east of the stockade. Is it hidden in some way, or is this a glitch in my copy of the program possibly (I'm playing on emulated spectrum plus (is that what it's called the 48+?) so I don't know if this has some oddities) Anyway you seem to be able to get home without finishing off the boxes!end%252520screen.gif

Here's the two map sections with Crusoe standing next to the box.
    crusoe-1b.gif crusoe-e5.gif

What was your final score? Maybe it has to be 100% to get the telephone number? I'll check that later.
  • edited June 2011
I didn't check the final score. And that engraved box is the last one that I found. Given that I got confused over the clue on the carved cross, I'm not sure if I counted the boxes right! But all I got was another metal disc! Anyway I've finished my version of the map so if I can figure out how to put it in the archive you can have a look and see if I've missed anything! (if I can't figure it out, I'll include a link to it)crusoemap.jpg I'm being dense so can't work out how to upload the map, but here it is anyway

So basically I still don't know what the point of all those engraved boxes was, but I have completed a game that I started playing about 26 years ago. And it only took quite a lot of cheating! I'm pretty satisfied, right now!

So, these patches you've made for Crusoe? You may have gathered that I'm totally clueless on this, but how do I enter them? I'm using Spin.

Just checked the engraved boxes and it is true that I am unable to count. In my defence I've been off sick from work on a massive dose of codeine (amongst other things) and haven't slept for 4 days!. Still leaves me with the mystery of what to do with the last metal disc (marked J). I wonder if the boxes are merely intended as an additional way of leading you to the site of the buried treasure?

Also, in doing this, I noticed that I got the letters of the engraved boxes slightly wrong on my map. And didn't include the tightrope on the key. Ah well

Please hold on, I will try to prepare a bugfixed version of this game later today with Battle Bunny's corrections and post the information in this thread.

It's really easy with Spin. With Crusoe loaded, select the Assembler option from the Tools menu, copy & paste the changes into the editing window, select Assemble from the assembler's file menu, then OK, and the changes have been made. It should say "No errors in 51 lines. 64 bytes generated." and some other stuff. Then follow the instructions which I gave earlier.

Nice map. I think that the last disc being J and the author's name being Jon might have some significance. Perhaps the 26th disc has the telephone number? I'm going to start again, as I forgot the parasol and don't want to trail all the way back for it (plus I've nearly run out of Elyxr). I'll see if I can sort out the disc mystery.

Don't know if you know this already but smelling the herbs seems to give a boost to supplies of elixir. I wondered if the honey did something similar? When I completed the game I managed to lose the pistol thanks to an untimely death, but I wonder if it can be used on the spider by the well, the only one that you actually need to shift. BTW my score just before finishing was 252% so I'm beginning to think the programmer was mis-remembering.

    Horrid jpeg ahoy!
You have still got this in its full size, right? If possible, save it as a png at its full size instead of shrinking it and saving as a jpeg. Jpegs are horrid and ruin pixels.

Well, I'll give it a go, but I have to say, the map started life as a load of gifs, turned into a massive jpeg and is now a gif again, so I'm not sure, at this stage, whether turning it into a png will help. (and I honestly have no I idea what I'm talking about!)

Thanks, that seemed to work just fine! I've just downloaded a load of books from WOS about assembly code and whatnot. This time I'm determined to stick with it!

There's an excellent free program called Irfanview which has a Create Panorama Image feature which is great for putting maps together from screenshots. Assemble each row of screens into a series of horizontal panoramas, and then assemble those strips into a vertical panorama to create the full map. It only takes a few minutes.

I prefer to use Paint Shop Pro and arrange the snapped pics within PSP.

The overall idea of using *.PNG is that there is no loss of colour or pixels.

*.GIF can cause issues (colour restrictions, etc.) if one does not know how use it. *.JPG is overall terrible and lossless JPG is not reliable.

I'm sure you are all right about the beauty of a PNG picture, but the file I've created seems awfully large and my rubbish email keeps rejecting it! So you may be stuck with the GIF (which looks fine to me but I'm a philistine in these matters)

    1) Email? Err ... say what now? What are you trying to do via email?

    2) When you say "awfully large" ... do you mean that it takes up a lot of space on the screen or that it's large in byte-size?

    3) Assuming you are trying to send the pic somewhere via email, may I suggest to you that you send the pic to Mr. WoS Himself Martijn VdH.
    You can do that here:

Well, I was emailing it to the Tipshop because I couldn't figure out the form in the archive (I know I'm a moron, it's probably very simple) . Large byte-size. Anyway I'm redoing the map as a png file with GIMP. It's amazing how the pleasure can be taken out of doing something! But may not get it finished as I'm back to work tomorrow now that I'm over my illness. Think I may go back to my lurking now (unless anybody can suggest a game similar to Crusoe that I can obsess about for a few days)

You are more than welcome to email me your (original) map, and I can get it cleaned and up on to WoS for you (check your PM box)

Also, how large is the map? (in bytes)

Were you trying to email a bitmap? A png should take up hardly any space as the beauty of Speccy graphics is a lot of repeated colours on a line, so the compression is more effective.
Not sure if you're aware, but essentially a bitmap will record a line like this: "1 red pixel, 1 red pixel, 1 red pixel, 1 red pixel, 1 red pixel, 1 blue pixel, 1 blue pixel, 1 blue pixel" whereas a png will record thus: "5 red pixels, 3 blue pixels" which is clearly easier to write down, hence smaller file size.

Thanks for the offer. I still can't figure out how my original file ended up being so massive (though it has been explained pretty well to me)

    Anyhow, I've done a new version!crusoemap.png

Well, I've finally completed Crusoe after 26 years. A couple of final points to note.

    * There's what may be either an intentional complication or a bug in the opening of the gold casket. A number of static item flags get reset every turn - this is what causes the game to "forget" about things like the fruit trees & water if they're not acted on immediately - and this includes the casket flag. Unfortunately this means that the game forgets that the casket has been found once the key has been inserted, so the remaining steps in the combination sequence result in the response "How?".

There are two solutions to this:
    1. Just bump into the casket again after each step in the combination sequence to re-set the item flag.
    2. Enter a POKE 41466,105 to stop the casket flag being reset (as opposed to re-set).

    * The 26 discs - an explanation. If all 26 discs have been found (with the last one being 'J') then, once the casket has been opened, the two rocks blocking the route south from that location will become passable, opening up a shortcut back to the island where the lookout point is situated.

It would be nice to track down Jon Smith and tell him that at least two people have finally solved his game. Unfortunately the telephone number which he mentioned in an interview is not to be found in the game (plus the STD codes have all changed since 1984 and it would probably have been a number for Automata anyway, who are long gone).
  • edited June 2011
Aha! I noticed those rocks missing but I didn't connect that to the boxes puzzle...

I didn't notice the problem with the casket. Though having got used to the way the program works it probably just felt like business as usual.

I really loved this game with it's quirky puzzles.

BTW my score just before finishing was 252% so I'm beginning to think the programmer was mis-remembering.

The score is calculated from the sum of points assigned to key items which have been found less the elyxr usage. So a low key item score less a high elyxr usage score can send it negative, so your score was actually -8%. (I was looking at the scoring routine in case having all the key items resulted in a score equal to this mythical telephone number - but it doesn't, as it's only counted in a single byte.)

As there's no explicit telephone number in the program code or data and no routine for decrypting an encrypted number, the final possibility which I can think of is that it's somehow concealed in the sequence of key disc letters: EURGZKPBSILAQNYCTWVOFHMDXJ - but all my ideas on that score have come to naught. I think that it's time to move on and finish off fixing Bride of Frankenstein.

I did have a shot at finding the author, but it turns out that there's more than one Jon Smith (who'd have thunk it?), and the former Speccy programmer Jon Smith whom I knew about was the wrong one.
