This could be true, my new boss has a lot of high end contacts at Nokia, and allot of them are leaving at the end of may, as they dismantle and re-arrange their operations.
Both Nokia and Microsoft dismissed this as nonsense when it was first suggested about a month ago. It also doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense for Nokia to have announced the abandonment of Symbian in favour of WP7 if they were about to be taken over by Microsoft, far better to wait till the deal was done and kept the company value higher during the sale.
Hasn't Stephen Elop categorically denied this? Not that he is to be believed... but like AndyC pointed out, there doesn't seem to be any particular need for MS to buy Nokia. They aren't in the phone H/W game - the OS is their strength - and if it was Windows 7 or 8 they wanted on Nokia handsets, they have that deal already in place.

I would think that M$ might use the Nokia tech to advance any sort of Skype-like sw/hw. So this might be worth it future-wise at least.

Nokia's new head is an ex-Microsoft employee <conspiracy mode="on">in which case what he wants is Nokia's share price to tank so it's cheaper for Microsoft to take over</conspiracy>
Without having to invoke any conspiracies, it's obvious with the new man at the helm, Nokia will be now allied to Microsoft. Microsoft doesn't actually need to buy them, once Nokia have nothing but WP7 for their smart phones, Microsoft can start dictating smartphone designs. (And it might do Nokia good, the problem at the moment is, well - let's contrast Nokia and Apple - Apple have exactly two smartphones, a white iPhone and a black iPhone, but Nokia has hundreds all with different very half-baked user interfaces). Nokia are great for cheap dumb phones that just don't have a lot of UI, but for smart phones they are a disaster. Even their semi-smart phones (like my old Nokia 6820) was a user interface disaster, it was just awful to use.

AFAIK, whoever the new boss was there was going to be a massive shake up. Had to be actually. I can see a Windows 8 + Windows Phone 7 (8?) duo being awesome for my phone/tablet/PC needs if they integrate well.
