Atic Atac

edited October 2012 in Games
I tried to use the solution from the Tips Section on here but I only got as far as Down left, pick up green key left, left, left, left, up, up when I hit a Red Door. Does anyone know if there's an alternate solution?

Don't bother with pre-made solutions - they spoil all of your fun and, like in this case, can be not very accurate. Just remember that the piece of ACG key in the Attic is the only one which is always found in the same place; you will have to find the other two in other parts of the castle.

Yeah that's true. I remember playing for hours thouugh back in the day and never finishing it, I would just like to finish but I think I'll give it a shot without cheats.

Also the missus used to play it years ago and wants to see me get to the end as she never could finish it either.

Atic Atac is easier than it sounds, actually; when you have a rough idea of the maze layout in your mind you can speed through the castle without a lot of effort. The maps on the WoS archive will certainly be useful for that. Just remember not to eat everything you see but be careful to replenish your energy only when you need to. Food items will eventually regenerate, but it will take a long time and by then it could be too late.

There are a few different layouts of keys and the game selects one at random. As Alessandro says, the best way to play it is to look at the map and get a feel for the layout, particularly of the loop route around the dungeon and to get a sense of which floor you are on. Also notice that the main stairs just west of the main door loop round and keep going up.

The main thing to aim for is to get above the room with the six yellow doors and drop into it to get the yellow key. You should open all the yellow doors on that level, then use the yellow key to go up the main loop of stairs into the attic, then hunt around for part of the main key. Then you drop that by the main door and try and find the other bits. And apart from those two floors, you don't need the yellow key anymore.

There are items that ward off the big monsters, but it's a waste of time trying to track them all down - just keep running if you meet a monster then grab some food afterwards.

As for the secret passages, the Serf is easiest to navigate through the barrel ends. The Knight uses clocks, and can sometimes skip whole rooms. The wizard can get into some useful places, but his habit of coming out of a bookcase in a different direction to when he went in can be disorientating.

The cyan key tends to be in the dungeon, on the way out to the stairs. You'll need it to get back into the house. The green key is somewhere in the house. As is the red key, but depending on the layout of items, you might not even need the red key to finish the game.

Have to agree with that. 'Back in the day' I regularly used to complete this in under 10 minutes.

That's an emulator "bug". It wouldn't be true on a real machine.

I think you'll find you only completed 31% of it :p

Btw how do you guys pronounce this game? Me and my mates pronounced it as 'Attic Attack' although I have heard it pronounced as 'A-tick A-tack'.

Hmmm, and he gets temporarily hindered by a few inconveniently closed doors which means there is the possibility of completing it in less time than that.

Me and my mum played this to death back in the 80's and 90's and I remember that. It said exactly the same thing on a genuine copy on a genuine Speccy.

Green Key very close to start normally so get that first then proceed to getting Yellow.
Red Key is often found on way to Yellow key. Once get Yellow key come out of that area and drop the yellow key to go into the caverns (no yellow doors in caverns). Part of ACG key is usualyl down there and if lucky you can get the blue key. If you are going for speed however, forget the blue key completely. Drop ACG key parts in screen SW of start screen as you pass by that screen. I use the Serf (Barrels) most of the time. Usualyl complete in under 3 minutes if pieces fall into place. Nonetheless, almost always complete it. Love the game.

Not true. Not quuite sure where the randomiser goes - I suspect it is when hitting Start.
    'Congratulationt' ???

I had a copy of that TZX/TAP for a long time - before I did the honourable thing and digitised all my own Ultimate casssettes to TAP.

From my experience, door opening and closing appears to be predictable and so I don't think you could save time as you will just be slowed up further along if you did get though a door early.

One problematic door for me is actually waiting for the trapdoor to close in the attic room with two tables either side. Have to wait for it to close to walk over it and go S twice to get to the head of the ACG key.

My wife and I are polarised on this. I've always pronounced it as 'Attic Attack' but she pronounces it as 'A-tick A-tack'.

Colour me impressed. I wandered around this game for hours as a kid. I've never actually found any part of the ACG key, that I recall. Maybe one? I kept getting lost and ending up in the dungeons. I certainly only survive about 3 mins tops :)

(Just keeping up my "crappest speccy game player" level..)

How do you memorize your way around this thing? It clearly has more than three rooms...
