I tried for hours to get the diamonds in the right order, but I don't think I ever succeeded...If I did I certainly never saw any of the secret rooms! I hope they're in the Speccy version though, if only so I don't go insane after all that time trying to access them... :D
Are the secret rooms in the speccy version? And if so, how do you reach them?
there are no secret rooms in speccy version, but if you get diamons in correct order, you will receive permanent shoes, double rainbow, fast rainbow, etc.
I completed it once. I've never come close again. I've never managed to get the diamonds in the correct order - at least I can stop trying if there's no secret rooms!
Brst versions of rainbow islands ive played are on the Amiga, ps1 and speccy.
The amstrad version was a wee bit juddery for me, the nes pastely pile of crap, master system version gameplay was pants with strange graphics, commode version same opinion of the nes version.
Only versions i havent played are the pc engine and megadrive versions.
I still don't understand why everybody yarks their trouser cucumber over this game....it really isn't that good?
Regardless of the format.
I'm going to put this in huge, bright red letters, as it's the only time I'm ever going to say these words:
I agree with DM_Boozefreak
And if that can happen, then maybe I can win the lottery! Anyway, I too have never seen the appeal of Rainbow Islands. Bubble Bobble, yes. But Rainbow Islands leaves me cold.
the finding of the secret rooms all count for something (actually there isn't a secret room in the Speccy version - it wouldn't fit
never played this back in the day because it just looked too 'cute', but since playing it emulator style I think it must be one of the best spec games ever done IMO. similar to Rodland but in colour. can't complete it though finding it too difficult even using snapshots
the ps1 and pc one are basically the arcade machine with a front end on.
no, they are not. Bubble Bobble featuring Rainbow Islands CD-ROM for PC and PS1 was awful conversion. too many bugs and differencies with original arcade game.
later, Taito Legends disc for PC and PS2 (which had Bubble Bobble) was real emulator packed with arcade ROMs, so it was 100% identical to original.
If you're playing the 128k version for convenience of no multi-load, I suggest turning the music off by pressing S as it results in a slight drop in framerate and responsiveness to controls. I am fussy. I don't play the Speccy one these days as I prefer the arcade version, but the Speccy conversion is one of the best. If a home version can teach you all the nuances you need to be good at the arcade one, it's right up there as a top conversion. It even has a little bonus points easter egg that isn't present in the arcade version, if you know how to exploit your abilities ;) There are subtle differences like changes in points scored for certain items, but the platform and enemy placement and movement are all arcade perfect as far as I can recall. It's a stunning conversion which I'd have never thought possible.
Will be getting the arcade PCB as a present to myself this year.
The arcade game is one of the best games, imo. Still play it a lot on mame.
The Spectrum conversion is fantastic. Amazing use of colour, with great use of BRIGHT (lots of clash, but never noticable due to the amount of action). It pisses all over the conversion of bubble bobble, which looks dreich and dreary and plays like that too.
I've always considered carefully managed colour clash (like in Rainbow Islands) in arcade type games to be much more preferable to monochrome.

Interesting! :) I will try next time.
I also love this game, one of the best conversions for the Spectrum, although I dont like at all that when you die, you lose all your powers...it makes it almost impossible to finish.

I was really curious about that. I completed the diamonds in order and it doesn't make any difference. What's the source of that info?
I disagree: Bubble Bobble is a good conversion altogether, which manages to capture the "feel" of the original coin-op despite being short of 20 rooms. Rainbow Islands is even better though.

imo it's the most playable out of all the 8bit conversions :)
i've completed it back in the days, but not with true ending though (i didn't collect all the dimonds on all islands).
as i told, there are permanent power-ups given, if the diamonds are completed in order. this is equivalent of secret rooms in arcade version.

i played it that way and had permanent power-ups then.
