XBox 360 to 'feature' more advertising - lucky us!

edited June 2011 in Chit chat
The greedy gits at Microsoft have discovered another way to make cash; getting people to play with (well, interact with, to a very limited degree) professional advertisments. The 360's dashboard is already plastered with adverts that we don't want, without more adverts being showered upon us and classed as some sort of user desirable feature. It wouldn't be so bad if XBox Live! was free, but no, we have to pay for a service that relentlessly hurls adverts in our faces.

Worse, the rumour is that Microsoft might be adding a new feature that when you boot up your 360 you get an unskippable 30 second advert to watch before you can use your 360 for anything else. This is just a rumour (as far as I can tell no one has posted a link to even vaguely confirm this) doing the rounds on the 'net, but I wouldn't say for definite that Microsoft wouldn't do this. Especially since so many of us are 'tied' to the XBox 360 by our large games collections that won't run on any other machine, that many of us couldn't afford to go over to the PS3/Wii/PC in protest.

i wouldn't say plastered, and i would exactly call them hurled in our faces.

and yeah you have to pay for it, but i knew that when i bought it.

i don't understand your rant ewgf, did you think you were buying a 360 cos it was not going to advertise things and that you could play the games online for free?

No, I'm just no fan of the barrage of adverts, especially when they are somehow supposed to be a service to us, and more especially when those adverts aren't used to remove the cost of XBox Live!

Personally I'd like to be able to customise the dashboard, like PS3 users can, and get rid of all adverts, and many 360 owners feel the same. Instead we're forced to endure the adverts and the rubbish dashboard just so that Microsoft can make every more money (like they need it!) from advertising to a captive market. More than a few people are up in arms already about this, and if the (admittedly only rumoured) unskippable thirty second advert at boot up does become reality then a lot more people will be voicing their unhappiness.

Advert's wouldn't bother me to be honest. The ones that are there now are easily skipped over. A 30 second "intro" advert wouldn't bother me either as by the time I've turned my machine on, put the disc in and got settled down, 30 seconds will have easily passed and I'll have missed it ;-)

Can I just say that you'd still get the adverts even if you're NOT a gold member. I'm a gold member, my other half isn't. The only difference between her dashboard and mine is the special offers bit. Can't see it being any different for Kinect. And you don't have to be a gold member to use Kinect.

Okay, so Kinect users are getting funky new adverts. I don't care, I'll never use Kinect.

Yes it's **** that we're getting more ads on the dashboard, but the only time I spend on the dashboard is when I first switch it on and log in, go up twice to go to the marketplace, check out the 7 tabs for the new arrivals, then go back down to the disc/user bit. Oh, and every tuesday I check the deal of the week which is usually the second selection on the spotlight bit.

I never see the adverts. If you bought the Xbox to play games then you shouldn't really see them either.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

    Hmm

That got me thinking about something based on my Cable internet CAP.

As the adverts need bandwidth to download, they should allow the feature to switch them off, especially as its a paid service. Otherwise they are effectively 'stealing' my bandwidth.

I am paying for the online service, not advertisements. I only want the services I am PAYING for and nothing else...certainly not my precious limited bandwidth which they are stealing with the unwanted ads. Maybe if you have a cap you can work out how much the ads are taking and bill them for the bandwidth

(I hit my cap every month).

Still my xbox is hacked so....hehe

Well ... and that got me thinking ... there is an upswing to this, as this means that as more users use up their bandwidth, internet providers will "have to" up their technologies/bandwidth so eventually this means increased bandwidth for everyone, even those of us who don't have an internet-hooked-console.

That's a good point about the bandwidth usage, I hadn't thought about that, and no one else has mentioned it in the threads I've seen so far, but it would be a concern for some people, no doubt.

If they introduce that feature, I'll just disconnect my 360 from the net..
