Ooh! Thank you Virgin!

I just realised that my upload speed on my current XL broadband package (20Mb) has been upped from 768Kbps to 2Mb. That's nice of them!

I still find it amusing that my broadband connection insists it's 100mbps, even though it so blatantly is not

I used to get that years ago on an old hardware setup. Something to do with the ethernet drivers I was using IIRC. Nothing to do with the broadband itself.

Check your prices against the website. We just found out we were paying more for 20MB than it costs for 50 :o

Thanks to prices and bundles changing but Virgin not automatically changing ours. ******s.

But now we're getting a new router from them on 2nd august and upped to 50MB so that'll be a fun day :D
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

I assume with Virgin the 20Mb is the limit you can upload before throttling?.

Heh, thanks for this thread. Because it made me check my broadband account - I have been using 6 MBit/s for a couple of years now and somehow forgot to check for updates. Turns out I can upgrade to 18 MBit/s and it stays at exactly the same price.

I've been on their 20 meg service since it appeared as the second tier. Never noticed any throttling going on. And that's with downloading ~100 gig a month on average.

Same here, but with 20 meg instead of 6

This thread made me also think hang on? I hardly download anything at all any more. I've probably downloaded less than 500MB worth of stuff in the last 6 months :o

At one time none of the computers I've ever used could cope with my leaching

That's probably also because you do most of your gaming on consoles if I'm not mistaken, boozey. If you play PC games using Steam then you'll get quite some downloading going, especially during times when a lot of discounts are offered. I've probably downloaded about 30-40 GB in about a week from my various purchases ...

Yep the last PC Game I downloaded was Thorgal about 2 years ago, and I haven't even installed it yet.

I saw this game and I'd read some Thorgal comics when I was about 12 years old and I thought "Oooh that looks interesting, I remember Thorgal". It obviously wasn't that interesting though.

I think I gave up on PC games as all the ones I've tried to play over the last few years have been too old for this PC to run properly, and too new for DOSbox to handle them. Or this PC has been too crap to run the newer ones I've had any interest in.

PC gaming is so fickle I find :D

Better than it was when I left them but still pathetically low.

When I left Virgin I couldn't do a full update of a fresh XP install without the limit kicking in, now I could, just, but if I got 2 games from Steam I would still be stuffed unless I had the XXL package at the cost of a second mortgage.

iSPs limiting your speed? I don't get it. You pay for the speed you want but you can't use it all the time? Sounds unfair to me.

Hmm. I'm on the XXL package and was thinking of reducing it. Don't think I'll bother now with all those limits. My monthly downloads can range from 1Gb to 100+! It's especially gonna be hit now with loads of new seasons starting of my TV proggies :-)

You don't pay for the speed, you pay for the speed you can get from the local exchange that's closest to the tier. Some BT customers (my mum included) only got 5.5 meg on a 10 meg connection.

But there wasn't a tier near the 5.5 meg so she was kinda stuffed.

I have to admit that I'm a fair regular downloader, and I have only hit the throttling thing erm... once? And even then in the grand scheme of things it didn't impact on my web browsing or anything else for those 5 hours.
