Can you imagine seeing a whole load of pristine cassettes with Mark's Dingo artwork filled with a cassette with the game on it!? That would be aces....
..and me at the next stall doing acrylics on canvas of all the chuffing koala variations ;)

Ha and I thought I was the only geek to have printed out the inlay!

Yeah maybe we should do a limited run of handmade cassette copies to give away at Replay!

That would be an awesome idea.
...then at least people can enjoy the cute cassette if the game turns out to be crap. :D

I've told you already, its far from crap. It has the same 'just one more go' factor as something like 'Jumping Jack'. And the addition of the new highscore table has only made trying to improve your top score that little bit more fun. Honestly, this is the first game I've had anything to do with for years, its got to be good or I'd be asking for my name to be removed. That's not gonna happen as long as the little itty issues are ironed out. I can't wait for it to be finished and out there. It's a cracking little game!

If you are planning to do a limited edition cassette release, I'll donate some brand new cassette jewel cases for it. You should even do an even more limited release double cassette box release, too, with the larger of Mark's design (with the border) as the inlay artwork.

I hope I would be eligible for one of those. :D

Seriously though, I still have all the original Ultimate games from "back then" but a couple of weeks I bought an extra Underwurlde on eBay with the intent on transforming it into a Mire Mare cover - for a display case like a few other Wossers has done too - but this Underwurlde box...which was supposed to be in "good condition" - looked like the seller had been sitting on it with his fat ass for 25 years. It looked like hell.

Everything I have from back then - books or games, are all in perfect condition. I'm not a collector but I take good care of my belongings, so I was naturally hoping that good was good...especially from a powerseller. But it wasn't. :(

Yeah, so I'm not pulling my punches - it was 'chinesebabe01' whoever that is. What a c*nt and what a waste of money. Not buying from him/her again.

I trust you gave him the chance to redeem himself? If not left the appropriate feedback. It's amazing what moaning about a product, especially when he so obviously lied about it, can do!

Thanks for the offer of the boxes. So is there anyone here who would be able to, when it's finished, put the code of Dingo on to 10 or 15 cassette tapes? I will donate some printer ink and paper! :) I can ASSURE everyone they won't be sold, they will be given away, probably in my raffle (I'm donating an N64 and some games to be given away in aid of Cancer Research at Replay)

And yeah some double box versions would look jolly too! :)

    Here's mine!
    DingoBox.jpg

I had to make do with an old scratched tape box, I don't have any new ones!

Oh and here's the 'Mire Mare' boxes I made. I don't own 2 though, I gave one away! :)

Yeah, how about 20 single cassette, 5 double cassette and 1 carboard box versions?
  • edited September 2011
Yeah that sounds reasonable. Be good publicity and help raise some money for a good cause.

Many of us won't be able to get along to this year's Replay.

Would you consider selling a few via post? I'd certainly like to order a copy.

Probably there will be more than 20 people interested to buy the game!

Maybe contacting with Cronosoft could help? :)

Errr guys read the rest of the thread. This can NEVER BE SOLD as the copyright is owned by ACG.

The one big thing I still want to improve, but don't know how to (yet), is better collision detection between the player and the enemies, as the game is currently using boxcollision checks for that.

What's the problem with your box collision detection, too sensitive? Do your sprites vary in width from one frame to the next? Is it a problem going around corners? You don't have to stick to square or rectangular boxes, it's incredibly simple to write an octagonal or diamond-shaped collision check routine. Just a few lines of code, in fact.

I know what you mean - I think, but it does sound like you're self-contradicting yourself. ;)

I think it's fun how there suddenly was talk about selling the game as that never crossed my mind - the game will be free for download like everything else I've done. So no Cronosoft. Besides, Mark has posted the artwork so it'd be a snap to make one yourself, though.

However, I first thought there could be some physical copies at Replay for display purposes, but if Mark wants to they could also be sold (at Replay) and the money given to a good cause?...is that what you meant Mark?

For what it's worth - to make them a little bit extra special from the ones people can do themselves, they could be numbered and signed by me and Mark? Would that make buying a physical copy a little bit better than making it yourself?

No I never mentioned selling them at Replay. Just offering them as runner up prizes in the raffle or just giving them away to anyone who shows any interest, I dunno!

I'm not contradicting myself if you read what I wrote! SELLING RAFFLE TICKETS TO RAISE MONEY FOR CANCER RESEARCH, PRIZE IS A NINTENDO 64 AND GAMES I'M DONATING AND DINGO CASSETTES, PERHAPS, AS RUNNER UP PRIZES!

The game could be sold, as some others have been in similar situations, just charging for the tape itself and the shipping cost, without getting any profit. Thats what I meant.

Leave me out of ANY talk to do with selling copies. After all that over the top palaver with my mock up advert , which I only did for a bit of fun, I'm not even gonna discuss it.

Nah, you're better of going for the 20 single, 5 double and 1 cardboard given away for charity or for some other special occasion at Replay. And then they can become uber-rare....pun intended.
  • edited September 2011
But then, with the artwork on line, anyone can make their own, for just a few pennies

True, but for these official 26, you should do something small but unique for each printed inlay.

Hasn't Mark done enough extra stuff already? You'll be wanting a special Moon-On-A-Stick edition next ;)

Well here's a double cassette box sleeve for those who would want one of these. If you DO want to print one out bear in mind that the full size artwork for all these bits and bobs will be released when the game is. Best wait for that as the quality will be better. Photobucket shrinks them down a bit, I'm just putting them here so you can see what's been done. I know the Ultimate instructions are white ink on black paper but I've put the instructions on a white page because all that black ink just isn't printer friendly and am thinking you would all rather not waste all that black ink.

    DingoDoubleTapeBox.jpg

Now I really should make a start on that loading screen!

Funny you should mention that. I hit this problem earlier tonight. One solution I've found is to use http://imageshack.us instead. There's a set of options to determine how, if at all, uploaded images are resized. Images can be upto 10Mb on a free account too, which is nice :)

it's incredibly simple to write an octagonal or diamond-shaped collision check routine. Just a few lines of code, in fact.

Just noticed jonathan's offer of guidence for help with the collision detection there... If no one else is interested, may I be the one to ask how simple it really is to do such detection - its kind of one area that I have often wondered about personally... From your description, Im tempted to imagine that one checks the screen address bytes are various points around the sprite before printing the sprite on screen, and those that aren't zero, trigger detection... This would assume a plain background, however... Is that how you would do it?... Its an area I know nothing about, so would love to see example code (especially if it really is "incredibly simple" - Im all for "incredibly simple"!!!!)...

Yes, my late answer to Jonathan's question isn't laziness...just too deep in code to mock up the following little picture, but the thing basically is - the sprites aren't all the same size - sideviews are slimmer than frontviews and with box collision detection you get inaccuracy in your detection, so I'd be very interresting in learning precisely what Jonathan has in mind and whay can be done in "just a few lines of code", too.

With 32x32 against 32x32 checking you'd get a collision between these two sprites, and that's not good. I've reduced my "boxes" a bit, but it still doesn't feel right.
