My Speccy mini-pilgrimage to Cambridge - with pics!

edited September 2011 in Chit chat
I was in Cambridge on Monday, and as I had some spare time, I thought I'd visit a couple of the "historic" Sinclair locations.
All photos taken Monday 19th September 2011.

The end of Willis Road.

The old Sinclair Research building.

Me trying (and failing!) to look cool outside the Baron of Beef. The missus was just shaking her head in pity at this point.
I also walked down Kings Parade, but I couldn't remember what the notable addresses were.

Nice pictures! Can you tell the bloke outside the pub to take his hands out of his pockets while thinking about Clive Sinclair?

I just about managed to maintain order (although it was 3pm on a Monday afternoon, so unlikely to kick off!) :-)

And what's up with that head in the middle of the Sinclair building ... is it the head of a female or male???

    ( Nice pics BTW icon14.gif )

Also ... where is this supposed "Secret Garden" where one is supposedly able to "Sit" and "Relax" ... does Frankie know of this at all?

    Great pics.
I've just thought of a great game: Everyone must try to go to Cambridge and take the same Baron of Beef photos (same angle and with them standing in the same position). See how many pics we can post up on this thread before Christmas!

(I live in Essex so it is a realistic option for me to take the same photo)

Yes, I know some of you live all over the world, but see it as a bigger challenge!

But if they told you where the secret garden was it would not be a secret garden any more.

    Anglia Ruskin University maybe ?

    here some more pics

inc the same red staircase ?

In 1982 Clive Sinclair converted the Barker & Wadsworth mineral water bottling factory at 25 Willis Road, Cambridge into the Sinclair Building to use it as the company's new headquarters. (It was sold to Cambridgeshire County Council in December 1985 due to Sinclair's immense debts and finance troubles.)

The notable address is 6 King's Parade - where Dr. V tested the source code.
It is the address in the front of first editions of the Orange manual.

    Same staircase with additions.

    From your link:

    The steps do have handrails.
The steps have a handrail on both sides.
Motorised scooters are allowed in public parts of the venue.
Customers cannot charge scooters or wheelchairs at the venue. :-)

Why has 'Baron of Beef' anything to do with Sinclair?

... Or was it just beer time? :-)

It's where Clive Sinclair and Chris Curry had their notorious bar-room brawl (which was widely publicised in the British press when it actually happened). It was also their "local pub" where they often went for a beer.

Haha, excellent pics. Glad I'm not the only one then.

I also did my pilgrimige to Cambridge back in June. Think it's a must for any serious UK-based spec-chum. :D

    Here's one of my pics:-

Probably the most photographed pub of the Sinclair scene. :D

(That's not me on the photo by the way, I'm holding the camera)

Amazing. These photos make me want to go there at once and shoot pictures to my heart's content - that is, if I could take a break from work longer than one day, which does not happen often throughout the year

Did some of you guys actually go inside the Baron of Beef?

If so, weren't you overwhelmed by the desire of slapping your mates with rolled newspapers while shouting assorted profanity each other?

Well it's worth it just to go to Cambridge, as it's a beautiful city with all the colleges and great historical architecture, the punting etc... 45 minutes on the direct train from London Kings Cross, you could do it as part of a London trip.

But no, alas I've never been inside the pub. Although I did have my "Metro" newspaper with me at the time. :D

A few years ago, I would have spent the whole afternoon in there, but since I gave up drinking a while back I've not yet set foot inside a pub, too tempting for me. :D

    Haha, didn't notice her. :D

Tried to get a shot without people in the way, but Cambridge in summer on a Saturday. There's that many people with cameras, myself included. :D

For that photo I'm standing on some small wall oposite the pub IIRC. Tried to get a bit of height to take the snap.

Took this one as well, but appears she's on this one too. :D
