Fix an iPod?

edited December 2011 in Chit chat
Hi, I have an old iPod, it is a 4th Generation click wheel, 40Gb model. Ie it is the last version before colour screens became available.

Anyway, the battery doesn't charge anymore, but it works when plugged in (although it won't synch with PC). In addition to this I have had lots of clicking, skipping, and refusing to play tracks before the battery failed, so I also suspect a dodgy HDD. I've seen some tutorials on YouTube, replacing the items looks easy enough.

Has anybody tried this? Does anybody know a reputable supplier of the parts. I saw one battery guaranteed for 10 years, but it's in the US.

I can't see much point in replacing it if it can be fixed for cheaper.

Replacing a hard drive in a iPod is easy enough (though whether it is financially viable is a different matter)

For replacing batteries it can be more difficult depending on which model you have.

ifixit.com have good guides to give you an idea of what you need to do and sintech (see speccy parts suppliers) have a good range of spares.

Maplin also stock spares but know how to overcharge

OK, thanks Kilby, I'll take a look at Sintech. I thought Maplin were a bit pricey. The ifixit vids are really good, it's them I looked at.

Well I've ordered a battery. I'll give that ago first, see what happens. It could be the HDD connector has come a bit loose, so I'll check that while I'm in there. Sintech only advertise 20Gb HDDs on their website, so I've asked if they do a 40Gb or can get one, and how much. With a little luck it may not need one anyway. I can normally get rid of the sad iPod or folder Icons buy hitting it fairly hard on a desk 3 times at the top corner.

Believe it or not, I read that remedy on the Apple iPod forums, with a big disclaimer, only do it if your iPod is warranty expired and the repair costs more, so I did it, and it worked. It was clicking and skipping before that though, that's why I did it.

I must be honest, I've not been overly impressed with the hardware. I only want to see if I can fix it for less than a new one.
