Olympics

edited March 2012 in Chit chat
Just had a tour of the Olympic park today....still lots of building site bits but some of the buildings are looking pretty nice and when they turf it up etc it should be good looking

Just curious what others think

TBH the whole Olympic hoohah leaves me cold. I don't live in the UK so I guess I have a different take on the worth of it, but when you see budget figures of 10 billion pounds being bandied about you have to seriously think whether that money could be better spend on a nationwide programme of funding youth centres and providing local sport facilities (where instead these things are being cut back or already demoralised local communities are being forced to scrape together the funding for it).

I know there's a point to be made that the whole thing will bring money in, but when everything's balanced out will it have made that much of a difference in the long term? Without doing a whole load of research, I don't believe that olympic stadia have a great reputation for being ongoing symbols of hope and regeneration (although I would be delighted to be proved wrong). All the construction and retail jobs being created around this are pretty much all short term prospects and only serve to temporarily make it look like things are getting better but it's just another way of fudging the numbers and robbing Peter to pay Paul.

I suspect that any positive balance of funds will somehow be funnelled into the coffers of the private enterprises that are funding some of the costs, as usually happens.

(I'm not a cynic, honestly. I just think that perhaps the old rose-tinted glasses have been trampled on so many times that I start to doubt the usefulness of patching them back up again...)

nice day out for MP's and other gravy train *coughs* with their faces in the trough. It's hosted in London, Londoners fork out for it.. yet every other *cough* who isn't from here benefits from it and got tickets..

the Olympic lane thing is a joke as well ?200 if you go into that traffic lane. How many school kids got tickets ? prolly tickets "given" to MP's etc.

Paris must be rubbing their hands and thanking their stars they didn't get it.

ya can tell I'm a fan.. it'll be another white elephant like the dome was before 02 turned it into a venue (pity as all the concerts are other side of london now :p )

It's a terrible venue for music. Luckily, most of the acts I like are too small to play there.

I'm looking forward to the summer, first of all its Euro 2012 so i'm waiting for everyone to start moaning when their programmes are moved/postponed !

Then a few weeks later the Olympics start, looking forward to the big events not canoeing, marbles or shooting etc.

Fingers crossed we have a nice summer, need some hot weather
  • I have no real interest in The Olympics.
I'm not against it either. In theory at least. It's just the stupid amounts of money that are being spent on a 2 week sporting event. Then you've got the train drivers backed by that idiot Bob Crow demanding extra money for doing their normal jobs.
  • edited March 2012
It'll generate a ton of money for businesses, think of all the hotels who are packed out, new trainlines/stations and sporting places created for people etc. Lots of tourists coming to the country as well.

Would much rather my taxes be spent on this then given to some 21 year old chav with 7 kids (and a 50 inch plasma tv of course!)

To be fair you hear this everytime when we do something specially like a sporting event, i can imagine back in the 1800's when Big Ben was built people would probably be moaning about 'what a waste of money, would rather the money be put towards stopping the plague etc !'

you'll be pleased to hear then that Mike Brown (top dog) has committed to give train drivers a job for life already....no doubt with the unspoken "as long as you play nice during the Olympics" caveat

Bit annoying given the Victoria line could have been running without drivers since the 60s

No doubt. We'll have the Euro's, then Wimbledon, then the Olympics. So I expect Newswatch and Points of View will be bombarded with emails from cretins complaining that EastEnders or the frickin' news has moved slots and their OCD-ness couldn't cope.

Let's face it, these programs are only on multiple times a day whereas the international footie and athletic tournaments have the gall to be on the box bi-annually.

its when they run over that really grinds my gears.

you'll look at the news paper at it says 'big lebowski' 10pm, so you look forward to it, you get a cup of tea, settle down, switch on the box, and its two people whos names you cant pronounce hitting a tennis ball at each other!!

    Well said!
It's wall to wall soaps then when they put football on instead every now again people complain!
Perhaps they'd like it the other way round - wall to wall football with soaps every now and again!

Same here, but we're paying for it no matter what so I've decided to get 100% behind it and not be a miserable bast (for a change). Seems like that's the only sensible option as whinging/being bitter about it won't change things. Might as well try to enjoy the whole thing.

Yes, he's a scum bag. No doubt about that... fantastically good at his job though (assuming you take his job to be "screwing transport companies and the general public for all he can in order to get ridiculously cushy deals for the workers he represents").

Exactly ! But roll on July time and wait for i'm sure a long winded post by someone moaning about it and how Antiques Weekly isnt on until friday because of the shooting event etc ! God forbid if they moved Dr Who if that was on !

The BBC aren't completely daft, they'll not have anything decent on the schedules while the olympics are on, it'll all be filler. Old repeats that they won't get too much stick for moving.

The safest thing to do is just watch all the other channels while the olympics are on. After all it's not the 1950s, there are channels other than the BBC Television Service.

Damn you're right you know ! I actually pressed 'up channel' after Channel 4 and theres loads of new ones ! Feel stupid now for watching only four channels on my TV ;)

But yeah good point, with so many channels (even though a lot of crap), cheap dvds to hire/buy etc, i cant see how people can complain they havent got anything to watch

I can, but I do that even when there isn't sport on...

"Big" is easy enough ... "Lebowski" ... well, when you get to the "O" part, you just open your jaws a bit further when pronouncing that bit of it.

My argument is they should have named it Britain 2012 or UK 2012 because when its all said and done and if its a total flop do only London pick up the tab for it or does the whole of the UK get flogged with the debt whip.

The amount of money spent on it would have covered most of the countries debt but they want to waste it on this load of tosh.

Was going to say the same thing ! Dont think people realise how much debt the country is actually in.

As for the name its always the citys name isnt it ? Eg Atlanta, Seoul Olympics etc
