destiny mission

edited April 2012 in Games
Just wondered what you all thought of the game destiny mission.

I love the music but the game itself i feel is lacking and the background are too busy to see anything going on. It could have been so much better but i only noticed that this was only out on the spectrum and not on the c64 or amstrad so maybe thats why i cant find other ports of it.

I can't say it's a bad game, because it's not - technical realization is brilliant although on some stages the detail is even too much - but on the other hand, it's not great either. At times it looks more like an interactive demo than a full fledged game. So it's a yes, but a 6/10 yes to me.

Tragic, tragic, tragic... This has the potential to be brillient, but ruins it with too much background material!!!... Its technically very very good, and a fine shooter...

It needs to be hacked... badly needs it...

    Calling all hackers!!!

    - We need some pokes to alter the background graphics to something more minimal (or even just remove them altogether - although ideally, it would be nice to just remove the whole parallax scrolling thing altogether and gain that extra bit of speed)

    - A nice extra might also be to add mouse support.. The game is fast enough, but with mouse movement, it would give it a little extra on the movement front...

    Anyone up for it?...

I think i may have moved onto the Sega Master System by the time this was released,so i am not familiar with this title.

The music is terrific but the game is extremely let down by the background that makes this incredibly hard to see. It could have been so much more if the background was just left plain.

Loved the demo more than the final release.
Still good tho, but yes... it could easily have been soooo much more.

Watch my walkthrough. With a few pokes I removed the background.

Now things are much more visible. I agree, playing with this background is a nightmare.

It's a hesitant yes for me too.....

Was really impressed with the demo and loved the music....but it's just too damned hard to see stuff most of the time...

So..yes, but could do better! I'll go for a score of 66%...

You are THE MAN!!!... Don't know how you did it, but it looks better without that background!!!... Any chance you could let us know how you did it, so we could do the same to the 128k version?...

Curiously, as I watch the RZX playthrough, it seems like there are only really 2 levels, that simply alternate, maybe getting a bit harder... or at least that seems to be the case with the bosses at the end... Is that a valid observation, or just me?...

Loved the SU demo at the time - felt it was a really solid and slick shooter, but never played the full game. Do I remember reading about some significant differences between the demo and the final release?

I noticed this game couple of months ago here in the forums, and quickly got my attention.
The thing is that the game was sold via mail, so its really hard to get a cassette with the original, so I will just have to try the demo on SU (If im not mistaken) to play in the real machine.

I want to try it first in real machine, like the old times :)

Anybody has any spare copy?? :P

Quite easy. There is a nice tool called SGE:

    ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sinclair/tools/pc/winsge.zip

I used it to find the background graphics and simply cleared it:

    214.png

As you can see all this paralax scrolling is in fact a cheap trick ;) , a sprite consisting with 8 frames of animation copied all over the screen.

I've thought now that proper hacking would involve more work. When you remove the background everything is visible but you don't have the sense of moving forward. So we could move the read borders instead. But that would involve much more serious and difficult changes

Haha me too... Looks like one of those 'magic eye' pictures.. :-o
  • I clicked 'don't know'. It looks familiar but not played it. Looks a bit busy, like a sideways-on Octan.

Here's a video, so you can see how much of an eye-murderer it actually is.....

Skip to 2:00 for the gameplay, this guy seems to love playing out the music before gameplay....who could blame him. :)
