London Mayoral Elections

Voted for Boris Johnson. He's much more entertaining on the telly!
And I've never forgiven Ken for organising a St Patrick's Day celebration in London then refusing to do anything for St George's Day cos he said it was racist??!

After Monday I won't be a Londoner so I guess it doesn't really matter!

I'll comment *AFTER* the polls are shut...

    it made it easy....

2 mayors were away when stuff "occured"... only 1 came back..

My misses has just been to vote against having an elected mayor in Brum on the basis that "we don't need a whole new layer of bottom feeding corrupt scumbags - we already have a council for that".

Actually, he did support St George's day celebrations and Boris was just making it up that he didn't:

Not that Ken is above making things up either, of course:

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/livingstone-campaign-respond-to-rumour-that-actors-were-used-in-political-broadcast-7644000.html

I can't see why anyone would vote for either of them, to be honest.

If I hadn't been disenfranchised this year I would have voted against Boris and Ken. Given a choice between the two I'd choose Boris, because I want CrossRail finished on time. Being from Wales I would never vote Tory though.

Strange cos I remember the interview with him claiming St George was a racist!

Really? I don't suppose you've got a quote for that. I know that the image and flag of St George are used quite a lot by racists, but I always thought the dragon-slaying Turk himself was a myth.

It also seems a bit strange that he'd spend our money on celebrating the day if he thought that too, so something doesn't quite add up here.

Myth or not, now that I have Turkish in-laws I get to celebrate all four saints days. I'm from Wales, as was St. Patrick, but I also have Scots ancestors.

It was an interview on television. Not sure the exact wording he used. It was a long time ago so maybe I got muddled or maybe like most politicians he's changed his opinion on this subject!

there is the joke about , why do they need to write "england" on the St. George flag.. they spoke about it on the radio.. again I find it odd that football team names are on it, some chavvy neighbours had them.

they are thinking about having mayors in nottingham I saw on the news and other places..

hopefully you all voted and you'll all be at the BFI at the weekend

St George wasn't a Turk, he was likely as not from Roman Palestine:

That's handy. Although I've always felt it was particularly unfortunate for Anglo-Welsh relations that we happened to pick a saint that slew a dragon of all things. All the more reason to keep the celebrations low key, I suppose.

Anyway, I'd better get out and vote while there's still time. I've decided to go for Jenny Jones, being the least objectionable of the candidates.

If you'll read on, you'll find that his father was from Cappadocia, in modern day Turkey, and that's also where the dragon slaying legend seems to come from.

Yes, but St George wasn't from there, and Turkey didn't exist at the time, it was all Greek territory. So he was a Palestinian of Greek descent. :)

he's a comedian, faffs and bluffs around questions when asked.. Riz Latef , he fears her coz he tries to stop her asking questions.
he's a bit too pally with private business as well.

he moaned about getting 400k+ a year money... while the rest of us aren't even on 1/10th of that probably..
the incidents that kicked off, he was on holidays and took his time coming back , then was lack-luster when he visited.. thats how it came across.

Ken although I don't overly like him *DOES* know his subject and does facts / figures WITHOUT asking his advisor or people under him.

Paddick , sure he was a policeman.. but he was a career one , thats how it comes across .. far different from the people on the lower levels that walked the beat.

Jenny Jones, is gonna hammer car owners even more.. so cut me out.

it was only between Boris and Ken, might as well have been...

?80k+ job a year is what they are interested.. if they cut it to ?30k .. would they be so keen ? lets see if they want the job then!!

i think st george isn't as popular in england as we are a mainly secular society, where as in ireland they are mostly catholic and that other lot. so saints for them is more important.

if you want st george to be more popular shoe horn a present or two or choco egg in there and we will go for it. :-D

i guess for scots and welsh they like thier saints just to have a little bit of distinction from us. kinda like and upstairs downstairs thing going on.

I can't see Boris being in it for the money. He gets three times that for a weekly column in the Telegraph alone.

Early rumours suggest Boris is going to win another term.

We're still waiting for the Scottish results. Be interesting to see if Glasgow City Council changes hands for the first time in, I think, decades.

Popular rumor also says Brum has rejected having a mayor. That will annoy our resident German, she wanted that job.

Where he was from doesn't really matter. St George is the patron saint of Turkey. But to bring it back on topic, Boris is of Turkish descent.

At least that'd explain why he's constantly banging on about St George's day whilst most English are apathetic about it.

thats a very bad new york-ian accent (he was born there)

perhaps he can get the US embassy to pay the MILLIONS they owe in congestion charges... while other londoners have to fork out for it

or perhaps we should stop paying them in the US

It looks a bit too close to call to be honest. This is the state of affairs at the time of posting:
    london.jpg

Boris is ahead on first preference votes, but there are enough second preferences available for Ken to pass him.

I find it quite amusing that the BNP candidate has a latin name, maybe that's why he's so unpopular? :D

He's the only Italian black muslim candidate.

Carlos Cortiglia emigrated from Uruguay in 1989 apparently. I think you can probably find real life examples of almost any combination of nationality, ethnicity, and religion. My friend who introduced me to my wife is Italian, black, and muslim.
