There is a moving thing (spinner?) that tracks you down - hardly puzzle genre material.

Yes but the whole action is hardly arcade... it requires you more than a fair bit of logic to negotiate every screen.

I would suspect any maze game of requiring logic to solve too. And according to wikipedia a maze is a tour puzzle.

Something chasing after you does however prevent it from being a puzzle game.

I don't think that's enough not to qualify Sophistry as a puzzle game - certainly it's not an arcade game, since it chiefly relies on a gameplay logic that is even much more complex than the one associated with mazes since Edward Tolman's studies about "cognitive maps", which involved experiments featuring rats put into, well, mazes.

Let's say what Martijn decides about this, then. To me, the game relies too much on thought and topology to be classified as an arcade, despite having some arcade-ish elements thrown in.

Not played this game since back in the day. I would say that it comes down to whether the chasing enemy is just acting as a time limit (puzzle game) or whether you have to deliberately take action to avoid the enemy whilst simultaneously trying to traverse through the puzzle (arcade maze).
