Noisy PSU

edited June 2012 in Hardware
I recently picked up a 48k Speccy from eBay. It works fine but the PSU seems a little on the noisy side. I remember my old one gently humming back in the day but my current PSU sounds more like an electric razor. Any thoughts people?

    broken/fractured pcb maybe?

    De-laminated transformer core?

I've seen super glue suggested, though since that is slightly conductive I'd be inclined to go for cheap nail varnish or something.

Very likely one or more strips of metal in the transformer have become loose.

You could try to bind them firmly together with a tie wrap.
Don't bind it on the coils, you might damage the wire or insulation.

Plastic 70 is the real deal for buzzy transformers and coils.

It does sound like a transformer plate / lacquer problem,i have heard of people re-coating them in some cases but with the ZX psu i am not sure it is feasible as it has been a while since i opened one up.
With larger transformers they sometimes have bolts or a bracket that become loose and can be tightened, the only other thing i have known go wrong with a speccy psu is the large filter capacitor which had simply become dry jointed on the pcb.

Thanks for all the info and tips guys. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to the electrical side of things. I'll have a look inside my PSU and see what I can do.

If you don't hear from me again, it's safe to assume I've blown myself up ;)
