Wimpy Restaurants

edited July 2012 in Chit chat
Used to love these places before McDonald's came in and took over the world. Had presumed them extinct.

Now been told that there are quite a few left around the country, mainly in dodgy areas. I almost want to seek one out and see if it's as amazing as my memories as an 8yo suggest (can guess the answer).

Any recent experiences? are you one of the lucky ones with one in your region?

More or less same price as McDonalds, waitress service, and real cutlery and crockery. Yet McDonald's win. It sucks

Wow, I also didn't realise Wimpy still existed! I even bought the Mr Wimpy game (a Burgertime ripoff, except with a really awful first stage) when I was a kid.

I wouldn't go in one now though. Not keen on any fast food place really, although I do like Subway (would you classify that as fast food?).

One of my earliest memories of being out in the big world was going to see Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back as a double bill at the cinema, and then being taken to Wimpy, where I had a HUGE knickerbockerglory that was taller than me at the table. I remember the talk saying i'd never finish it, and mocking as it arrived at the table as my eyes popped wide.

Well I did finish it in record time, and when I did I said I could eat another one. It was all fun and banter with all the old folks watching me scoff the first that they bought me another one as a laugh. I really struggled with the second, but I got there in the end.

I was only 7 or 8 at the time.

    Nice memory... :)

Wimpy's are so rare these days that I actually took a photo of the last one I saw (it's in Doncaster). The last one I went to was in Brixton on the night I went to see Slayer at the Academy (it was closer than McDonnalds  ).

I think the one near where I used to live is still there, but I've not used it in years. Probably about 15 or so at least. I always prefered the "burgar bar" around the corner as their onions were proper onions and not the diced stuff you got in Wimpy (but other than that, they were pretty much the same).

I think most people either had a Wimpy birthday party, or at least had a friend who had one. Those were brilliant fun, at least, they were at my old local one as they would close the whole rare section off for it, so we had loads of room to run around in :-)

Yes, the one near me is still there on Google maps, so I'm guessing it's still there now...

I used to really enjoy Wimpy back when they were really popular. I went to one recently and was disappointed with the food. The burger was really bland..

Got two near me, one on the sea front at southsea. Clarence Peir, so its overlooking an arcade. Nice.

And on the Rownham's services on the M27

Both good Wimpy's and I'd sooner go there than burger king or mcdogals

i used to love the game

That was one of the first speccy games I played. I still remember the words to the jingle (tragic, I know):

"Wimpy is the home of the hamburger, with the biggest burger under the bun."

Also, there is something weird in the UK about having the mascot of the rival company. BT used to have Mercury, and Wimpy used to have a Beefeater. Beefeater had Mr Happy? What was Mercury's?

That's another thing, I don't know what it's like elsewhere in the country, but Burger ing's seem to be vanishing at a fast pace too. We lost ours several years ago, then York's dissaperared, then the ones in Hull went for a Burton (I know where one is now though) and the one in Bridlington isn't there anymore either. Anyone else noticing those going or am I just unlucky?

There was a Wimpy upstairs on some kind of mezzanine floor in the Arndale Centre, Crossgates, Leeds for years on end after the majority of them vanished, I think it's gone now but both my mate and his Mum had the dubious honour of working there at one time or another.

Leeds has lost most of it's Burger Kings over the last couple of years, I think we're down to 3 nowadays although the one in the city centre is always full of scum. I just HAD to take my Daughter to the one down the road a couple of weeks back with the exclusive purpose of making her wear a Burger King crown, I even took a spare for when she'd ripped the first one to pieces:-D.

I went to a Burger King today, and had coffee and fries. The roof was leaking.

erm, the last Wimpy I went to was in Torquay. I think that there is still one in Worthing?

Had this same conversation IRL with some friends a couple of weeks ago. Apparently there is one in Addlestone (a proper old school one, there's one near Morden tube station at the end of the Northern line that I went in a few years back which was an absolute sh?t hole, and best avoided). I fully intend to seek it out at some point soon...

Wimpy need some serious modernisation or update. Their burgers are petty decent still, last had one a couple of years ago (maybe longer) in Beckenham in SE London. Good grub, crap decor, GREAT half pounder burger sauce. Scrumptious.

I used to prefer Burger King over the others but now they seem to be very overpriced compared to the others so I usually avoid.

best burgers are Grubbs burgers in Brighton, charcoal grilled

Some good wimpy memories. remember going to the birthday parties, and the milkshakes were good.

if I wasn't so busy changing nappies I'd seek out the one that's within an hour of me for some burger fun.
